Your Weekend Ride Reports -- July 25/26

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yesterday we rode our clubs' "Sunflower Ride." It's a fund raiser for Make a Wish. The ride was 66 mi. with 4,000 ft. of climbing and we averaged 15.1 mph. We did have a crash when one of us came around a corner to find a walker right in his path. It was a 90 degree right and he tried to correct and his front wheel hit another bike and down he went. Last I heard he separated his shoulder and broke two ribs but is home beginning recuperation. At home when cleaning my bike I discovered that my rear wheel was rubbing ever so lightly on the chain stays accounting for climbing being a bit slower than usual.

I led this: MR. B - A bike ride in Frenchtown, NJ

6 total participants. Someone's electronics said it was more like 4,400' of climbing.

At around mile 20 we saw a bear. He crossed the road shortly before I an another rider reached that area. Then he moved parallel to the road. He wanted to continue east but there was a house and the homeowner was out doing something, so the poor thing felt trapped between us and the home. Got a few seconds of video. The GF thought she was taking photos but she hit the video record button instead. Then we moved on the give the bear more space.

My best ride this year. Rode with the front/long pace line of my ATF group. The young guys were pulling pretty hard throughout the 60 mile ride. I kept up for 54 miles, but fell off with only 6 to go. Didn't feel too bad as over half the line had fallen off by then. Checked my computer when I came off and saw a 19.2, but the front guys did a 2 mile sprint at the 45 mile mark that was a little fast for me (27+MPH). I was pulling the second group at 24MPH. So I estimate the front guys averaged about 19.5. After falling off I finished at 18.9. I'll take it, and try for 19 in two weeks. I rode with the front group four years ago, but haven't had that kind of speed while I was travelling for a living. Back at home base this year and riding four times a week, some of the restaurant weight is coming off and the speed is coming back. Feels great!

Sat: Sprint triathlon in RI. 600yd swim, 12mi hilly bike (900') , 5k run. My no-run training policy did not work out as well as i had hoped but was still 6/11 in age group and had the 13th fastest bike leg overall. perfect weather and saw many friends so that was good. GF got 3rd in her division.

Sun: 15mi recovery ride. Legs are tight and sore from running.. 3mi run hurts more than 65mi w/ 4000' ride last weekend

200k (220 actually) brevet on Saturday. Finished right on the 13.5hr cutoff time, 10,000ft of climbing. Quiet roads, great scenery, bloody cold.

A mostly easy weekend.
About 44 miles on a gorgeous Saturday, up to my favorite little climb, Clausland Mt. Road, which I did before and after a break at one of the more popular cycling hangouts in Nyack. Sort of a staircase hill. 1.2 miles, average 5.3% grade. First bit is average 12% grade, (tied for 7th of 519 this year). Sped past a straggly group on the way up the second time, so that was fun. Although I'd gotten a late start and hung out at The Spoon for quite a while, it still wasn't noon by the time I got back to the market, so I couldn't get a beer. So, I just charged up State Line Hill since it was there, then turned around and took the shady route home.

Sunday was an attempt at 'recovery,' (not that I needed it so much, but I wanted to give riding extra easy a try) so I didn't leave until 11:30 or so - so I could be sure I could get that recovery beverage when I got to the Market.

However, I made the mistake of taking the fixed gear bike. Although most of the way up is very easy, I'd forgotten about a couple of little bumps at the end, which I had to get out of the saddle for. Then there was a headwind coming back, so although it was short and simple, it wasn't the super easy spin I'd planned. But it was still nice.

Saturday was a rainy day wash out. There is some system off the coast that pushed rain in all day. Sunday it cleared up in the morning so I went for a 35 mile ride around S. Tampa. The streets were really flooded in parts. Some houses looked like they might be overwhelmed too if the rain continues. The rest of the week is looking a little "iffy".

Sorry to hear about that other cyclist ... I've been there with the separated shoulder and cracked ribs.

I've also been there with the rubbing rear wheel. It happened on the first 8 km or so of a 100K event. I could not understand why I just didn't have any strength at all and why everything seemed so hard. Finally I checked, and sure enough ... rear brake almost clamped on!!! The rest of the ride seemed easy!

Two years ago I crashed and broke my neck. Now living with C1 & C2 fused. But, riding again and better than before. My rear wheel rub was tricky. The tire was rubbing on the chain stay (very little clearance) but only when rider weight was applied. So, spinning the wheel didn't show anything. Only when it got farther out of true did I see it. Fixed it and yesterday went out on a 13.6 mi. TT route (800' elevation). Headwinds much of the way and pretty hot. I was dripping seat into my eyes. But, managed to do 16.8 mph which is only .7 mph off my best ever. A lot different than riding with the wheel rubbing. At age 69 I'm still getting better on the bike.
