Good weight for handlbars

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

"Average" depending on your budget. Most people probably aren't wanting to spend $200USD on a friggin handlebar. And the difference between a $200 handle bar and a $50 one is mostly only felt in the wallet.

All depends on how much you want to spend on a handlebar. My flat handlebar is a carbon one and is really light (narrowed to 660mm wide).

If you have a rigid fork a carbon handlebar will help you to soak any bumps from the road too.

This is my flat bar: Easton EC70 Wide Carbon Flat Bar | Chain Reaction Cycles

I'm more of in the $50 range so that is probably an important note. I see some around 300g for this price range. I'm looking for a classic bend in aluminum to compliment the build I'm doing. The whole front end is Ritchey comp/WCS (yeah I know not the "high end" Ritchey). Logic says to go with a Ritchey Classic bar. But at 300g it is considered "weighty". ANyone know of another that fits the bill and is lighter?

Your weights seem awfully low to me. The Kestrel EMS Pro SL bars that I have weigh 185g and they are among the lightest I know of.

Would you trust your dental insurance with one, that is the question.

I know plenty of people riding them for years with no problem and I know people with name brand stuff that has failed. So yes I would trust it

300 grams is a decent weight for that price. 3T Rotundo Pro is an excellent classic shape bar that's a bit lighter but a bit more expensive. It is worth checking out for sure.

sub 180 grams Super weight weenie

180 - 240 grams Very lightweight

240 - 300 grams Reasonably lightweight

300 - 360 grams Heavy'ish

360+ grams Very heavy

Ritchey WCS and Shimano Pro PLT components are some of the best value when it comes to price vs weight.

3T Pro series is aluminium. Team and LTD are carbon, but Pro is aluminium.

I agree. But I'd also like to add that the bar's feel in your hands matters more than weight. Find the drop shapes you like, then consider weight.

Guess what I meant to say was the color aluminum. Brushed steel, what ever you want to call it. Black will suffice. But if possible steel to keep it looking "classic".

But no, your right. I see where I went wrong.

About the feel in my hands. Where I have no experience with different bars. Only time will tell what feels good or not. But good point.

Thanks for all the input guys/gals

Not sure where you're getting your weights, but published weights include: ENVE 250 grams, Zipp 240; Easton EC90, 225; Ritchie WCS 233.

225 grams is at the low end of road drop bars, aluminum or CF.

I agree that Elvo's numbers seem quite low, but I have to say yours seem to be to be bit on the high side. 180 g carbon bars are quite readily available (though not from the major brands perhaps). Whether they are safe to use is another matter entirely.

For example, these Kestrels: https://www.gottaridebikes.com/p/HND0059.html

The ENVE and Zipp numbers were from Competitive Cyclist, which is usually pretty good with accurate weights.

I didn't do an exhaustive search, just picked some examples, so I likely didn't click on the lightest examples.

Been riding with them for over 3 years. They survived a crash that put me in a helicopter and dented my old Ridley Noah

Sure, I wasn't doubting the accuracy of the numbers you listed. I was trying to point out that there are some lighter examples out there.

This entire post seems about right to me. You should be able to find a moderately priced aluminum bar in the 240-250g range. To get a lower weight, you are looking at 2-3x that price.

And yes, you can get a cheap, generic carbon bar from China, but that is not something I am going to do nor will I advocate doing.

Sub 200g is pretty light, under 300g is probably an aero bar (carbon). With some magic sub 150g can be done.

Williams Maxim ACS Alloy Stem
I went with these. They used to sell them with free bar tape but i guess they stopped doing that. They are $70 and ~235 grams which is pretty light. They also have carbon ones for $180 which are about 190g.
