Man Biking Across US for Charity Killed in Crash

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I pulled around a car that I thought the person was texting in and it turned out he was looking at the new bag of weed he had just bought down the street.

You can turn this on for AT&T phones but it is really annoying on public transit. The phone does not know if you are a driver or a passenger.

I question how safe it will be for cyclists. My wife has an MDX that beeps every time you stray out of the lane, including to give a cyclist 3 feet. I see lots of MDX's on the road, very close up.

Yes... the future... it is a safe and elegantly peaceful place of flying cars and cheap nuclear energy OR the apocalyptic, polluted and fuel starved anything goes... mad max-walking dead nightmare. Or just maybe.... the future will be much like the past was... which is much like today is.

15 year prison sentences are great things.... unless your the 15 year child whose parent has "been away" all of your remembered life.

No one advocates impaired driving! But overly harsh or tyrannical punishments doesn't benefit individuals, the victims family, or society as a whole. Causing physical and/or emotional discomfort, stealing away many of the pleasures of life through imprisonment, may provide a slight degree of sadistic pleasure for some. But at a cost of equal discomfort and suffering for the motorist's family.

There is NO simple easy solution. But maybe instead of deliberating on how to punish those who cause us fear... we should entertain thoughts of how to discard our fears. Since no one gets out of here alive. Maybe we should be more concerned about finding joy as opposed to living longer in vindictiveness and fear.

I live in Los Angeles and commute by bike and put in a couple of long rides every week so I'm on the road 6-7 days a week on my bike. There are like 4 cars for every person here and the particular city I live in has one the award for least safe drivers in the country. The average driver where I live is involved in an accident every 5 years. I've never been in a car accident with 22 years of driving under my belt so that I figure some people must be getting into 5 accidents a year to make up for drivers like myself. I don't live in fear but I do have 1-3 close calls per week and 99% of the time the person has a phone in their hand. Everyone that is texting and watching videos etc consciously made a decision to do that just like he person that drinks a six pack before driving. If they then kill someone there should be consequences and their family can visit them in prison for the rest of their lives and hopefully their kids will know not to make the same mistakes

A sentence functions as a deterrent as well as punishment. Getting a misdemeanor ticket for texting is annoying. Getting a prison sentence is alarming. Which do you think will deter more people from texting? It's a slippery slope you're on: so murders shouldn't get long sentences because it harms the murders' families? Where in the continuum of crime do you draw your line? I kinda like it where it's at, myself, when someone's actions causes another's death.

Not me. I'm all for punishing those that cause us death. Dave Cutter... has never seen an accident he couldn't blame or condemn a cyclist for.

Bull. Myself and millions of other Americans have... on occasion volunteered to kill people.... and have been thanked as [war] hero's for our actions.

These calls for punishment come from fear.... not logical reasoning. I can not begin to guess what "punishment" would satisfy anyone's fear. In the decades of debate about death sentences.... no conclusive stats have ever been found. But I might add that there is at least one public square where women accused of cheating on their husbands have been stoned to death..... every week for the last 1500 years. Yet... the women apparently still cheat.

Funny! Or is your thoughts so clouded that you believe that simple lie?!?!? Cycling isn't for everyone. Some people are just too fearful of the risks.

I take it.... you aren't well known for your compassion and love of your fellow man... huh. That's OK you know. You should be yourself. But you are kidding yourself if you don't see a lack of compassion as a charter flaw.

I generally stay out of debates such as this, but I can't on this. You're certainly allowed to have your opinion on this, but I couldn't possibly disagree with you more. Until people somehow magically always make the right decision, the sentence has to be the deterrent.

You're correct we can't agree here. I do not believe in magic. I do however have great faith in enlightenment and mature logical acceptance.

You must deal with different types of people than I see on a daily basis. Nothing I see makes me believe humanity is universally capable of such.

Just so I understand you... you don't believe that a 15 year sentence for a repeat offender of drunk driving (who takes a life) is fair because of the harm it inflicts on the driver & their family... you think that these sentences are a sadistic reaction from fear (although there are about 30 deaths from drunk driving in the U.S. each year)... and you think that instead of harsh punishments for crimes that cause deaths, your country should just accept the fact that one day we all die & just get over it.

Tell me this, in your opinion, what is a fair sentence for the person who kills a cyclist due to texting or drunk driving?

I don't think you understand me at all. And some of what you post.... I don't understand. In America in 2013, 10,076 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. And the health caused (non-accident related) deaths where alcohol was involved were MUCH higher.

So let me understand you.... you think we should imprison every American that drinks alcohol?

A fair sentence? "for the person who kills a cyclist" I don't understand the question. I've never tried to differentiate the people of the world based on sports or hobbies (only uniform style/color). Which "side" would this cyclist be on?

In 1982 26,173 were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. In 1992 there were 18,290. One of your premises is that the harsh sentences imposed these days are ineffective. The statistics suggest otherwise.

If I am killed by a distracted driver, my wife and kid won't have me around for the rest of their lives. You are correct that I have no compassion for ignorant, reckless people in our society. Read some Hobbes. If we dont want to hold people accountable, ISIS will be decapitating people in our streets before too long

Again.... you are incorrect! Until we show our compassion for the victims of ISIS.... the ISIS decapitating punishments will spread to even our very own streets.

I think you've mistaken compassion for inactivity!
