I remember my fellow University of Wisconsin alumnus Eric Heiden tried road cycle racing to mixed results after retiring after winning those 5 gold medal in Lake Placid in 1980.
Talk about thighs! Cyclers got nothing on those speedskaters. I remember an article in our campus newspaper about how Heiden had only a 31" waist, but had to buy 38" waist Levis and have them taken in to accommodate his 31" thighs.
S-I-C-K !
Any of you race inlines too? I used to play ice hockey growing up in the frozen tundra and was a pretty good skater, however those molded fiberglass inline skates are pretty damn uncomfy!
I'll stick with my hockey inlines for fun.

I never raced on em, but I used to play street hockey all the time. I broke one of my wrists inline skating! It is near and dear to my heart. But nobody else around here that I've seen inline skates, so they stay home for the occasional use at the roller rink.
And I FLY on 8 wheels

I've had both ice and inline speed skates, but I've never gotten used to polyeurethane on asphalt. I looove my ice skates though (Zandstra big bend blades on Miller boots).

I have skated 50-60 miles a week for the last few years. I got back into road bikes and frankly would rather ride than skate but still skate with friends on occasion. I mostly like the speed of a road bike...the hook for me. Top speed on 4-5 wheel in-line skates is almost half that of a fast bike.
I would pass casual bikers on skates all the time...even surprise a few that were moving along 12-15 miles per hour...but anybody decent on a bike can outrun even a strong blader. I like the speed.

I am a fast recreational cyclist and have never road-raced, or speed skated either, but I do "roller disco" when I can find the time. (I don't know what it's called today. Roller hip-hop is not accurate, bacause I generally hate hip-hop-too much bad-boy image, not enough substance). Maybe Roller Old-School music (The OJ's,, etc.).
I have been doing it since the 1970's. I have roller blades too, but don't really like the "feel" of blades. Not enough lateral freedom on the road, so I stick with my quads (4 wheels, not quadracepts).

I still use the rollerblades I had made out of my old CCM Ultra Tacks, they're maybe 20 years old now. Had the blades removed and had the first generation of Rollerblades mounted to themwhen they came out. Plastic boots suck. I would still rather get on the ice than the rollerblades any day though.

A bit off the point, but fun remembering ...
When I was in the market for my first real road bike, I was looking at the bike shops in and around Amsterdam. At Dasia (Haarlem), I had a good conversation with a young man about frame configuration, etc.
The shop also sells inline skates, and when I told him I was moving here, and looking to climb le Mont Ventoux, he told me about his summer trip there. He used his inlines to descend lMV!!! He also had a lot of metal in his head, like a titanium pyramid sticking out from below his lip, so I figured it was all part of the package.
Cheers...Gary

While I find myself running more these days to get and keep the heart rate in the desired zone, my legs remind me I'd really rather be blading. Blading is good cross training for biking and may be even more fun.
