Flat bar / horizontal top tube ideas?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Flat bar / horizontal top tube ideas?

Hi,

I am on the market for a new road bike, however I have two pre-requisites for this bike: 1) that it have flat handlebars (for a fairly comfortable commute) and 2) that it have a true horizontal top tube like the old bikes used to.

Are there any bikes with these two features that exist?

Also, my price range is around 1000$ give or take a couple of hundred bucks.

Was hoping someone could mention a few models to guide me the right way... Thanks...

Sorry, I've got no help for you...even did my own quick search.

The only bike I know of that fits those is the bike I currently have, a Walmart schwinn Varsity 1200 ($200). I've been riding it almost 2 years, commuting and group road rides, and I'm ready for a change, especially in the handle-bar area...I even added bar ends for another option...flat bars just don't allow you to move your hands around as much as a road drop bar.

HOWEVER, If I were looking for an upgraded flat bar road bike, I would probably be looking at the Jamis Coda...steel, but no horizontal toptube.

I'll also that there are a lot of FIXED GEAR (single-speed) bikes that fit your 2 criteria, but that's probably not what you want.

The other option would be to find a nice vintage steel frame, and swap out the handle-bars.

...so yeah, I'm pretty much no help at all...

Hmmm, interesting.
I think there are a few single speed flat bar horizontal TT bikes. But, very few stock geared ones.

You could, of course, do a drop bar to flat bar conversion, and sell off the excess components.

Why not convert a "classic" bike with either stem shifters or downtube shifters?

Oh, and is there a reason you don't want the sloping (curved) top tube?

Bikes: Many bikes in three states and two countries, mainly riding Moots Vamoots, Lynskey R265 disc and a Spot Denver Zephyr nowadays

Some of the Velo Orange frames could be built up this way pretty easily:

Surly Trucker or Cross Check, have the shop swap the bars out. Might not be easy to make it under $1000....

If you are tall then you probably have more options with horizontal top tubes. Almost all modern bikes have a sloping top tube for small frame sizes.
