I just bought a $600 kit, should I hang back on next club ride...

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have no problem paying for nice things that last, but honesty the one thing in my KIT that cost the most was my Diadora Shoes, as I said they were like 79 bucks at Performance in 1993. Still keepthem in the original box that has been repaired many times.

I take care of them, put shoe horns in them after every use, wipe them down with a damp rag evertime Iuse em, ever couple of weeks they get some polish to touch up the color, and last the get leather conditioner so the leather remains soft.

Honeslty I am not sure if anyone make a nice show like the old dog any more out of leather? New Diadors I have seen are made of synthetic something that never went moo.

Unless I'm wearing a suit of armour, $50 or $600 kits all get torn up when I have a pavement tumble so now, I just get the most comfortable stuff at the best prices. I keep my full kits below $100.

To answer the OP, hanging back or not is up to you cos you're going to crash eventually lol! That and a lot of sideways glances lol!

Ohhhh, I forgot you're the "anal" about the looks of your bike lol.... that explains a lot lol!

All joking aside helmets do have a shelf life and although most brands are understating theirs for liability reasons and to get you into a new helmet, 8 years is probably pushing it.

I bought my fist "kit" from Performance and $600 sounds about right. Of course I always ride with five Benjamins in my back center pocket.

Seriously...Does an expensive kit really make you that much more comfortable/faster, etc.? I wonder if anyone on a group ride would even recognize the cost of one's kit.

That said, if you've got the money why not; it's your perogative.

My thoughts as well, unless we're talking about helmet, shoes, jersey and shorts. That could easily add up to over $600. with the right choices -- like the top of the line, $500.+ Assos shorts.

Yes.

With 120kg/m^3 foam under your sitbones your tender bits don't go numb because you sunk too far into your pad.

An aero jersey gives you more speed than aero wheels and is uniformly snug making it more pleasant than one which flaps or has tight spots and looser spots.

An aero helmet saves about half the Watts of an aero jersey.

Obviously, you can get to "expensive" with more or less markup and discount.

Voler uses Elastic Interface Technology (who also supply Rapha and Assos) pads in their $120-$140 shorts and bibs which they sell directly with a generous return policy.

Last year's models, size samples, and unused team left overs can be had for 50-80% off. A $150-$200 jersey is a lot less painful at $40-$100.

I buy on sale and since I like to try stuff on, it's Performance and REI sale racks. Jerseys are plain 1/4 zip with pockets. I buy the cheapest shorts that have a chamois that doesn't feel like a diaper. Unfortunately, the bottom line ones aren't great. Socks are seconds: $4. I had a really hard time finding a new helmet that fit and ended up with a $100 Giro that is a great fit. SPLURGE CITY! Voler and Aerotech Designs seem to have favorable reviews here for decent quality clothing at a reasonable price.

Anyone who is dressed like an elite rider but rides like an overweight, out of shape beginner isn't going to be very popular.

Summer means some of us want to be fully covered in extremely breathable fabric, because sunblock sucks.
