Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Great ride to Malibu!

Are there any of you in the Southern California area that enjoys biking a good distance?! Well, for those of you that do, I'm sure a bike ride from Santa Monica to Malibu is probably nothing, but my friend and I considered it to be an awesome distance and we did that this morning! At around 6:30 this morning, my friend and I biked it to Malibu through PCH and it was awesome! The whole trip there and back was about an hour and a half and we came back burning a good 940 calories and it felt great! Do any of you bike around the area? If so, maybe we could get a group together or something! It was a great ride and hanging out in Malibu was awesome!

never make it over to the west side but I know that's a popular area. Some guys I follow on Strava did 40+ miles with 4900 feet of climbing in Malibu the other day. I bet the scenery is awesome

Sometimes when I'm in LA on business, I rent a bike in Hollywood; head out to Santa Monica, along the beach for awhile, up Topanga Canyon to Mulholland Drive, down past the Holywood Bowl, and back to the shop. There's a bit of traffic to contend with getting out Westwood, but I its a really good ride. Beach, climbing.

About 10 years ago my wife was temporarily in LA (adjunct prof. at USC) and living in Hollywood. I'd drive down on the weekends and bring my bike. I rode out to SM and up to Malibu a couple times. As Merlin said, the traffic in town was an issue, but nice once on the coast.

ummm...the santa monicas are the bleep in socal. more climbs than you can shake a stick at
and if you get tired of climbing, you can spin along pacific coast highway to rest the legs and
check out ocean views. weekdays, hit the climbs/coast early and be done before 3pm and afternoon
commute time. weekends...good night and good luck.

I'm way over on the east side of LA County, so I tend to ride in North OC more but yeah - except for the probability of drunk drivers (I used to think early AM was safe) riding up the coast is pretty excellent. Just did Cool Breeze on Saturday (starts in Ventura, heads up to Santa Barbara and back) and in July joined in on the aptly named "hotdog century" which was from Neptune's Net in Malibu up to Carpinteria and back. Cruisin the Conejo starts in Newbury Park and heads up over Mulholland and down to PCH for a while before heading back inland.

If you go to the regional boards, there's actually a semi-active southern california board you can post on regarding local rides, but I agree with you that riding up the coast is pretty excellent.

How fantastic is that?!!!! I need to bike to the Hollywood Bowl! That sounds like a great ride! What kind of bike to you ride?

Oh yeah! I bet it's a great breeze! You had it much better since you were heading towards Santa Monica rather than North over to Malibu like my friend and I did the other day. The ride coming back to Santa Monica was an even better breeze! Obviously since it was heading more downhill then usual. Nothing beats the ride back! Unless of course that ride consists of going downhill first and the returning uphill, haha! But yes! Riding the PCH is awesome!!! Just stay clear the glass and wide open [car]doors! I need to get a bike riding crew together or try joining a group like you do!

By the way, thanks for the heads up for there being a California Board regarding local rides! Much appreciated!!!

I've done that stretch before. There is a ton of traffic out that way. I've been going up to Ventura as of late. A lot less traffic and congestion.

What a great shot! I mainly go for the awesome scenic view like this going back to Santa Monica. It all really depends on the time of day you go. But, I'll try something new! We almost got to the border of Ventura where the freeway ends and no longer allows you to ride.

I rode from Simi to Santa Barbara in 2012. Thats how I found this section. Its been so hot inland recently that the only way to escape the heat is to either head to the mountains or my case the coast.

I park at Buenaventura and ride to the 150 and back. That's about 30 miles. We had a tailwind all the way back last weekend. That was pretty awesome.

That's just the road to the really scenic rides. Latigo Canyon, Encinal, Deer Creek, Decker, etc etc. all amazing climbs that lead you up into those hills & can Find Mullholland Dr, which isn't a bad climb in itself. Down the hill past the rock store & back out of the hills into Santa Monica for a much needed lunch. Miss that area!!!
My profile pic is from the top of Latigo, now that I think of it.

The Santa Monica's are our playground. Anyone in town can join our Saturday shop ride.......Serious Cycling in Agoura Hills. Nearly every weekend we do these climbs and descents.

I grew up just over the hill from Malibu. Riding along PCH was never my favorite (too many people drunk and/or with eyes on the beach), but definitely some fantastic rides in that area--Rock Shop/Mullholland, Decker, Hidden Valley, Encinal, I could go on and on. You want a serious challenge? Check out Deer Creek Rd. climb from PCH. Yeah, I miss riding in that area.

Yeah, like nesdog, my club rides around those areas constantly. Maybe you've heard of our annual century, Cruisin' the Conejo?

Drop on by the scheduled rides and say hi: Rides | CVC CONEJO VALLEY CYCLISTS Note that the weekend start times are temporarily moved up an hour earlier to beat the heat.

Hey, a fellow CVCer! I used to race for CVC/Team Parkpre back in the 80s as a teenager. IIRC, I did my first Cruisin' the Conejo when I was 12 years old back in '85 and was hooked.

Here's a pic of me at the 1990 jr. nationals. We used to have the worst kit. The inside of the jersey was lined with cotton and all the red/blue was rubberized. So hot!

My wife and I ride from Brentwood to either Malibu or Manhattan Beach (& back) most Sunday mornings.

Between the views of Catalina and the incredible weather it's hard not to be thankful for getting to ride in such a great place...

^Not really, though I have gone on a couple "vintage rides" organized by CVC member Bob Muzio. I tried to make a weekend ride once, but I messed up the start time and missed the group. I still have family in the area, so I'd love to tag along sometime when I visit in the future.

I've also been a CVC member, though I ride more often with Serious Cycling. If I don't like the Saturday route, I'll jump over to the club ride. Good thing the start times got moved up.....it was over 100 degrees last weekend during the ride!

After hearing of so many hit an run/drunk driving stories on PCH, I avoid it like the plague. The canyons are fine, but PCH... not so much.
