Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Funny Story

This past Sunday I was stopped at a light at the start of my ride and 2 guys pedaled up and stopped behind me. I said hi and after they responded hi, they both started tooling on me because I was not wearing a shirt.
Saying clever stuff like "were you riding so fast your shirt blew off" and "we should draft him because he is so fast" ha, ha, ha.
The light changed and we all took off in same direction. Two miles later they were so far behind me I lost sight of them
I am 50 and have been riding my not terribly expensive bike on the road for a grand total of about 5 months.
They were both in their 30's and fully decked out like they just stepped out of a bike catalog.
It's all good and they are by far the exception where I ride as almost every other rider I come across throws a nod or wave but still found it amusing and just a bit satisfying.
Especially as I only average around 18-19 mph on my rides.

True story lol.
But as ugly as my 50 year old, fully carpeted chest and back may be it pales in comparison to how ugly and silly looking anyone is in full kit. No matter how practical and smart it may be to wear. And I am sure it is.

I guess so.
Too bad they couldn't keep up with me at my moderate pace though. They could have cracked some more clever jokes maybe...

You totally had me in this thread - seemingly calling out people for being judgemental. Until this - when you became the one who was judging.

I would definitely recommend to you to wear some sort of coverage up top for skin protection - both from a possible fall, and from the cancerous sun, but to each his own. Also - pockets!

Moral of the story: Wear a ******** shirt. Seriously. I don't care how good you look shirtless. The fact that your hecklers were "fully decked out like they just stepped out of a bike catalog" sounds like code for "they were wearing the correct gear" to me.

Oooh. I'm sorry, but that's incorrect, but thanks for playing. We have some lovely parting gifts waiting for you back stage.

Some guys on some other biking forum are telling the story of a recovery ride where they came upon this shirtless cycling dude who thought that his 19mph pace was legendary.

Nice attitude but I don't get your judgement of people wearing kit.

The only thing I don't get it- why wear a shirt when it's raining? Seems like not wearing a shirt when it's raining would be the best thing. All it means is a wet shirt is clinging wettily to your skin.

2008 Tour de Georgia "Best Young Rider" jersey made by Hincapie. It's an excellent jersey. Thanks for noticing.

+1. That's why this whole story is pointless. Several times I rode with pros the day before the U.S. Pro Championship Race when it used to be held in Philly. They were out spinning their legs in preparation for the next day. Does that mean I was as strong as they were? Of course not.

And notice who the OP says he lost sight of them within 2 miles. Well....Maybe they took a different route.

OP: If you made this all up in an attempt to be amusing or whatever you need to do a better job next time. If this is a true story, it's not funny but rather inane. But you are in N. Jersey, so I can sort of understand.
