Since when did road cycling get overrun by wusses?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Are you sitting there wearing spandex right now. 'cause I'm not. It isn't about what you (and I) wear (he repeated for the umpteenth time), it is the ATTITUDE toward it. I buy moderately priced shorts, because I know they will feel just as good to me as the crème de la crème. Or maybe I should say they will feel as good as they need to, beyond which it makes no difference. If you are comfortable, you are comfortable, enough said.

He said "50% is the saddle, 50% is a pair of properly fitting riding shorts" without specifying the level of padding, just that they're "riding shorts" not khaki shorts, running shorts, jean shorts, or skorts.

My 1990s Pearl Izumi and 2015 Boure PRO shorts with flat synthetic leather chamois are more comfortable than any diaper short I've tried with a possible exception for my 2015 Voler Black Label shorts with 120kg/m^3 foam under the sit bones.

That's not how I remember it. In fact I don't think modern shorts contribute diddly-squat more to comfort than the old fashioned ones did.
I think most of them are a marketing exercise at best, with more naive cyclists buying when they squeeze the Charmin at the LBS.

Please discuss...and, oh yeah, you kids get off my lawn before I turn the hose on ya'.

Now you are talking about a real man's ride.
In what world does a grown man sporting a diaper and a fruity colored shirt seem manly?

50%, I have no idea but much better (remember, 74.78% of all statics are made up on the spot). Go ride an old pair of chamois shorts and a Brooks B17 saddle and report back. When I rode that stuff I was a teenager and 50lbs lighter. I remember when I bought my first synthetic chamois shorts (back in ~1982), I took two pair of them along with 2 pair of leather chamois shorts on a 6 week bike camping trip. I mailed the leather chamois shorts home after the first week. There was no comparison, the synthetic chamois was much more comfortable.

I remember Jesus saying that, but Zeus proved him wrong in the 1992 Presidential Debates showing that James was only 14.8% wrong and on those few it was only due to a rounding error.

Most likely because Poseidon found a flaw in the SRAM disc brakes causing a crash affecting his memory in 600BC.
