Finding places to ride
So... My wife and I are going to be going on a trip around thanksgiving driving from Florida to Pennsylvania.
We plan on stoping in NC, a few places in PA, and on the way back in Atlanta. Right now I've relegated myself to looking on Strava (for segments), and Google maps (using the Bicycle feature). Does anyone know of any other ways? |
Look for local bike club websites in places where you might stop. I know ours has some local route maps.
|
+1 on local cycling clubs' websites.
Also check the tourism board website for each area you stop in. |
Does MayMyRide let you see random rides in various areas ??
|
Strava Heat map is good for searching out popular roads to ride.
|
If you could be more specific about where you'll be it might help. I know south eastern PA pretty well but that won't help if you are visiting Pittsburgh.
|
Strava heat map. Although beware it may lead you to the course of a road race out in BFE. Of course this could just be a NorCal/Velopromo issue.
|
Let us know where you'll be and hopefully we can help!
|
I'll be in the Asheville area of NC for a few days, then western PA. Iirc I'll be in Washington, Pennsylvania, Hickory, Pennsylvania, and of course Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Then Atlanta for a day on the way back.
Honestly I just want to make sure that I don't miss anything that's worth a detour, for example we went to West Palm Beach a month or two back, and that's only an hour away from the ONLY Velodrome in the state of Florida. So I absolutely made the trip, and found out it's about 15 minutes from my Aunt's house! |
Odds are the weather will be cold. But in case it's not, you could ride some of the Great Allegheny Passage south from Pittsburgh.

And how cold is cold? |
Here's a link to the previously mentioned Strava heatmap. Very handy. It shows you all Strava rides, not just the segments.
|
If you're in Asheville ride the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's right there.

If you like climbing, Mt. Mitchell, the highest point on the East Coast, ins't far from Asheville. It's worth stopping in Marion to ride up it. (Marion and Asheville are both on I-40.)
There's a Velodrome in Atlanta, and another one in Rock Hill, SC. You also could take a day trip up to Helen, Ga. to ride Brasstown Bald. |

Highs could be in the 30s. Or they could be in the 60s. My guess is the likely highs will be in the 40s out there.

If you have gravel bikes, you can do the C&O Canal Path. If you wanted to, you could do the GAP from Pittsburgh, and where it finishes, the C&O starts, so you could ride all the way to DC. GH |
I'm not even on Strava and I use the heat map to find bike routes. It's a great tool.

Agree with the BRP for Asheville, NC.

Just FYI, I'm in Central PA, and I can tell you that my local cycling club are done for the season by Thanksgiving, the days are too short and the weather too cold for group rides, and you'll probably find most local cycling clubs in PA will be too. However, members may be interested in taking you for a ride if you email them.
