Yeah, it worked out to slightly better than free shipping but since I have never, ever seen a discount on speedplay anything I was pretty excited to use it. :)
Back in I think the mid to late 90's, around when the Zero came out, I decided I wanted a pair of red ones, and some friends of mine from Penn State also wanted to try Speedplays. We talked to a local bike shop there, but he wasn't an authorized dealer. I don't remember the exact details, but he had to order something like 10 pairs to get into the game, and we managed to scrounge up about 6 or 7 of us, so we had him place his initial order, figuring we could sell the leftovers. Once we all got our pedals, one of the guys put the remaining pairs on a local message board, at something like $10 off. These were the stainless Zeros, so I think they were around $185 per pair, so ten bucks wasn't even 10%. Regardless, within 24 hours the shop that we got the pedals from had a Speedplay lawyer on the phone threatening all sorts of legal action, because they assumed that since they just had a 10 pedal order, that these were the same pedals. But since we paid "retail", there wasn't much they could do, because we were a private party selling them. But I still thought it was pretty funny that they pulled the legal trigger so fast. |
As someone who's been using the Zeroes for 3 years now, I'm not sure if someone would like the max 15deg float. I keep mine 1 deg> as I just feel "more secured". Anything more than that I feel like I'm trying to adjust my knees to track properly and I'm not confident in sprinting or climbing at all.
Just a thought/tip. |
If you're looking for an alternative, look at Bebop pedals. They are easy to clip out of and have lots of float.

Good lord, is speedplay a division of specialized?

Update:
Sunday was my wife's first ride with the Speedplay ULA pedals. I set her up on the trainer, and after watching her spin I added two wedges to her right pedal, and we hit the road. It took her almost no time to master the clipping in and out, and at the end of the ride she decided that they were easier to get into and out of than her old SPDs with the multi-release cleats. With the old pedals she would complain about knee pain within the first 5 miles, then through the ride. Sunday we did 36 miles and she had no knee pain whatsoever for the entire ride. This is the first time in two years that she hasn't complained about knee pain on a ride. I'm hoping things stay this way. |
