Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling Sunglasses?

I have a pair of Oakley Flak Jackets I've used for most sports the past year. They have gotten really scratched up and are getting unusable. I can get 25% off a pair of replacement lenses through Oakley or can buy a pair of interchangable Tifosi's for about the same price. I only wear while riding in bright sunlight, and I'd like lenses I can wear road cycling, mtn biking and for general outdoor sports use: running, golf, etc. so, I don't know if the Road Prizm Oakley lenses are for me. Would you go Polarized Oakley replacement lenses or with Tifosi? I've geard good things about Tifosi, but have never owned a pair.

Are they as good? The Oakley polarized lenses are pretty solid.

No. Aftermarket lenses aren't close to as good as Oakley. Some will even give you a headache. Look on eBay lots of good deals for genuine Oakley.

I'm a huge fan of Oakley, but if you've managed to scratch the lenses up to near useless, you might want to weigh the economics of it all. But then again, Tifosi's probably cost more than discounted lenses, and you're probably going to destroy those in a year, too. And yeah, I love me some Oakleys.

Do yourself a favor and keep the microfiber bag in your back pocket. If you're not wearing them, put them in the bag while you leave them in your car, jacket, etc. I have a few pairs of Oakleys that I've had over the past few years and NONE of the lenses have a single scratch.

These getting scratched is a complete anomaly. I coached t-ball this spring and had the glasses hooked over a pocket while I was trying to help one of the kids get set up in a batting stance. He swung too early and hit directly on the glasses with the bat. Another time, I forgot they were hooked on my bike helmet and they fell on the road. I have other pairs that I've had for years and have never been scratched.

Actually, they are pretty good. Oakley had the best lenses 20 years ago but the world caught up to them.

Thing about Tifosis...they're for people with mid/small faces/eyes. I tried several pair and non came close to fully shielding my eyes from the wind.

Yes and no. I have yet to see aftermarket lenses with the correct base lens curvature to match many of the high curvature Oakley lenses. And the quality aftermarket lenses aren't actually that much cheaper. Put the aftermarket lens side-by-side with an Oakley and the curvature difference is obvious.

Just get some replacement lenses. Personally, I really like the VR28 lenses for general use, takes enough of the edge off to work on bright days, and light enough for dusk riding. Just about ideal for early rides or slight over-cast days.

I have some of the G35 lenses and they work great for golf but they're not quite dark enough for road riding IMO. I usually use the black iridium lenses but on overcast days, I do have another pair with less-dark lenses.

I tried some specs on with prizm lenses and I have to say, they looked great. I'd get a set of those if they made them for the frames I already own.

So +1 on getting replacement lenses and +1 for getting different ones for different occasions. They're easy enough to swap out.

+1 I own 2 of the reissued 2014 Razorblades (Fire and Violet Iridium), best sunglasses I've used thus far for cycling. I also own 2 pairs of vintage 1986 Rudy Project Super Performances, they're ok, the lack of a good nosepiece causes them to slide down my nose.

I've had a couple of different Oakley systems (Half Jackets and M-Frames). I now wear Rudy Projects and am pretty happy with them. I have had Tifosi's and the frames just feel cheap compared with the Rudys and Oakleys.

I've had my Tifosi about 2 months. There are some minor cosmetic cracks at the nose piece which a lot of reviews said there would be but I took the chance. They don't seem to be visible while riding and other reviews said if you ignore them they don't do anything. Plus I only paid 20 bucks or so on Nashbar. So even if they don't work out long term it's no big loss.

I have some Tifosi's right now and they're not as nice as my old Smiths or Rudy's which I lost each... But I find they're perfectly serviceable

I have an older pair of Tifosi LogicXLs with interchangeable lenses (clear, red and dark smoke) that I've had for 5 years. Still serviceable, but I just got a new pair of Tifosi Talos with single Fototec lenses that change darkness level with the sun brightness. So far, I really like them going from early morning to mid-afternoon and from late afternoon to early evening. They don't work in the car, so I use the old ones for driving.

My tifosi cracked in half after 6 months.

POC have been solid, though, for a year so far.

+1. Mine on are the verge of snapping in half, and I tend to require smaller frames, so it's not like I'm flexing them.

I don't have a small nose (maybe I just have an oddly shaped nose) but that's my main complaint about sunglasses. Plus I ride in the drops a lot and I hate looking 'over' my shades, while in the drops. So the ONLY shades I'll wear, have those little adjustable nose bridges that let me position the glasses higher up on the bridge of my nose.
