Which Pedals? 105 or Ultegra?
I'm considering switching from MTB pedals to either Ultegra or 105s and not sure if it's worth it to spend a little extra on the Ultegra. I'm in flat south Florida, I don't race, my longest ride is 70-80 miles and I would have rode 7500 miles this year if not sidelined 3 months with a broken wrist. My drivetrain is Ultegra so I could go Ultegra to keep it all consistent OR I could go 105 and save some $ and not care about matching the groupset. I came from mountain biking to road biking when I moved from norther Cal and discovered no "mountains" here (shocker right). As for why I'm switching... I've noticed hotspots on the foot recently even though I do have decent firm shoes (Bontrager Race MTB). So other than weight (which is no big deal) and giving in to my OCD and matching the groupset is there any reason to go one over the other?

The ultegra pedals are only $20 more on Amazon.com. Just do it.

^ yup, I'd go that route if the rest of the group were 105. I'm a matchy-matchy type. The OP should go for the 6800 (IMO).

Ok you guys made my decision for me... it's Ultegra. Now let's be like the chicks and talk shoes. I've been wearing Bontrager Race MTB shoes, I've briefly looked at Bontrager, any other suggestions?

3-4 days max. It's free shipping above a certain amount, but one set of pedals might not be enough.

I just hate the branding thing, and if I rode a Trek like you I would not want Bontrager shoes, or Spesh shoes with my Roubaix. Just sayin' I start to feel like a bit of a shill for "my brand"-I like the bike but don't want to be a mobile billboard. It's like trying to find a jersey that doesn't have a PI or a scorpion or a swoosh or whatever on it somewhere. For shoes there's SIDI, Fizik, Garneau, PI, etc, and they all make good stuff.

FWIW, current 105 pedals are as good as if not better than DA pedals of a few years ago.

I have both the old 105s and Ultegra. It really comes down to price difference, as the differences between the two pedals wasn't that great. If you can score Ultegras for a few buck more, then go that way, but don't pay through the nose for them. I have never used the newer 105s, though.

If you already have shoes with an SPD cleat, get Shimano A600 pedals. They are a dedicated SPD road pedal. Shimano advertises them as an Ultegra level pedal and they are just as light. I have been using them and they work great.

My first pedals were 105's, then I bumped it up to Dura Ace...there's really no difference besides the weight.

My bike would probably cause you to break out in hives: Red levers, Dura Ace FD, Quarq/Red crankset, Force RD, 105 cassette, Ultegra pedals.

I bough Ultegra PD-6700's from either Ribble or Wiggle (can't remember now). At the time, I think the 5700's were $90 and the 6700's were $105. The difference of buying Ultegra put me into free shipping. The 105's did not. It was a no-brainer because of that.

The only real difference between 105 and Ultegra is the finish and slight weight difference.
With pedals, 105 and Ultegra share the same spindle and bearings. Why pay more?
In the new groupsets, 105 and Ultegra are really similar and only real difference is in finish.
Dura Ace is still of higher quality and there is a distinction there. There are real quality and design upgrades with Dura Ace.
