I droped the hamer on my bike today... is my frame going to fail?

I was working in my garage and I droped the hamer by accident.

The culprit-

Should I get this inspected by a mechanic? Or can I keep riding?

Homebrew01 10-15-15 11:02 AM

Ooops. Ride it, and stay away from hamers.

Hypno Toad 10-15-15 11:03 AM

Carbon fiber frame, right? I'd have inspected and there are people out there that can repair CF frames - I understand Minneapolis (local) CF builder Appleman repairs CF frames.

Edit, or is that aluminum? If it's AL, ride on.

PepeM 10-15-15 11:03 AM

What's the material? If it is steel don't worry, you shaved off some weight if anything. If it is carbon throw it in the recycling bin.

Dan333SP 10-15-15 11:07 AM

@PepeM it's crabon. I read that I should apply SPF35 or higher sunscreen to the scratches to prevent it from getting damaged while riding outside. That seems complicated. Should I just ride at night?

woodcraft 10-15-15 11:10 AM

How many times did you drope it?

Doesn't look like a hamer blow to me...

PepeM 10-15-15 11:13 AM

Oof, that's at tough one. On the one hand you want to prevent sun damage, but cold is also tough on crabon. Maybe you can ride only at night but make sure to protect your frame with an aerogel blanket.

RJM 10-15-15 11:16 AM

What kind of bike is that? Is it a Niner?

I'd get it repaired if it is a high dollar frame. If it was steel I'd throw some nail polish on the exposed parts, pedal on and live with a blemished bike.

I droped it once really hard. I had to drope it because I saw a guy ride past in USPS kit that thought he was Lance, which surprised me and made me drope the hamer.

mcours2006 10-15-15 11:19 AM

Why no one has asked what you were doing with the hammer in the first place, I don't know. Can't think of anything task for which I'd need a hammer.

Hurts just looking at it.

PepeM 10-15-15 11:21 AM

I wonder how much vertical compliance that one is going to cost you.

I was taking the hamer to my friend Fred's house to drope off, and got a little reckless when I saw the USPS guy ride by my house. I should have dialed my grip up to 400 N m.

@PepeM I don't know, that is a real concern. I put it in a stand and tried flexing the frame sideways by hand, didn't move. Still plenty of lateral stiffness.

Can I measure vertical compliance with a standard park tools compliance gauge? Does it need to be re-calibrated with this hamer damage?

Doug28450 10-15-15 11:39 AM

The hamer looks okay. I wouldn't get it inspected.

Hehe.

Mindcrime 10-15-15 11:45 AM

From the minor damage, my guess is you didn't have enough watts dialed up when you droped the hamar. You should therefore immediately throw away the frame and buy a new Venge-Smenge with crabon wheels, post, stem, rails, crank, shifters, tire levers, valve caps and nuts. If you do not make this purchase immediately, the velominati will have to be called, and the beatings resumed.

Surprised, or pissed?

indyfabz 10-15-15 12:01 PM

Don't know about the frame failing, but this thread certainly has.

RPK79 10-15-15 12:02 PM

Should have kept the hamer in your back pocket.

I feel like I've gotten some good advice on how to avoid damaging frames when you drope your hamer. I'd call that a success.

dcsix 10-15-15 12:20 PM

Kil that hamer or it'll do it again-once they get a taste... bad hamer.

Usually, if you have to ask....

It depends on how big you are and how you ride. If this happened to me, I'd just ride it and keep an eye on it.

Set your expectations higher.
