Sore knees?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sore knees?

Ok, so I'm still pretty new to this whole cycling thing in general. I bought a mountain bike last summer, and it's great fun, but I can't always get to the trails so I wanted a road bike, too. I couldn't really afford one, so for the time being I've converted an old MTB into a road-ish sort of bike and I'm riding that.

Anyway - to the point. Today I went for a ride, the longest I've personally done to date. 42 miles. When I got home I had tired thighs, as I'd expect. But I also have somewhat sore knees. I've never had this happen before on shorter rides (up to almost 30 miles), or while mountain biking.

Any tips? Anything I'm likely to be donig wrong?

I want to get better at this, I would like to be able to be riding centuries by next (2006) summer, so I need to have strong knees .

From what it seems, you're pushing too hard of a gear. When you stress you knees it's a sure sign that you're pushing too hard of a gear.

Spin. It'll work you entire leg muscules and you won't get tired as much.

Other things to check is the seat height and position.

At the ripe old age of 44, I get aches and pains with the best of them. I use MSM as a recovery agent and find it helps a lot - especially on the joints. It's cheap (can be purchased at Costco) and safe.

Here's more info: https://www.glucosamine-arthritis.org...amine/MSM.html

here's a website I found that describes many reasons of having sore knees:
https://www.cptips.com/knee.htm
I find it really interesting and very detailed.

Where on your knees? In front over the cap? Behind your knee?
Check your seat height to see if you're extending your legs to far as you pedal, or conversly that maybe you're keeping your legs too flexed. Read that link too...
Also, keep a higher cadence...I find that riding at 80-90 rpm is much more comfortable in the long run because it keeps my muscles moving and loose...so keep that in mind next time you ride.
