Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

There is now talk of the big food manufacturers here manipulating the recipes for their products to reduce salt and sugar levels. The cynic in me thinks there are other motives on the move here.

That would catch me by surprise as well. I guess I picture both New Zealand and Australia as an outdoorsy type of country. But then again, the internet tells me that everything in Australia wants to kill you, so maybe everyone is just staying inside.

So ebay is weird. The Binachi has 6 watchers already, but no bids. I guess the trend is to bid in the final minutes to not inadvertently launch a bidding war early on. I guess people might just be watching to see what it goes for, if anything.

im quite sure i remember watching or reading something somewhere about aus being one of the healthier countries, but that could have happened 15 years ago just as easily as last week, however

Yeah, generally the trend is to not bid it up early. If it's my sale, I'm generally happy if, in the first few days, it has at least a 10:1 ratio of views to watchers.

Best strategy is to decide the most that you, personally, are willing to pay. Then either yourself or using eSnipe - Bid on eBay Automatically place that maximum bid within the last 6 seconds of the auction. I have done this both ways. If it is something I absolutely don't want to miss, and/or if I know I won't be able to bid right at the end, then I use esnipe. If your maximum is higher than others', you will win. Otherwise, not. But in either case you will have the best chance of taking the auction at a price you like, and you definitely won't pay more than you have to or want to. esnipe also protects you from a glitch on your computer like a temporary loss of internet connection or some other mishap that could prevent you from getting that last second bid in. Bidding any earlier just invites others to try to overbid you. Most bidders are complacent and are taken unawares by your sniping bid. It ain't pretty, but it is the most effective way to win an ebay auction.

Doesn't ebay allow you to list your max bid anyway?

I'm still maintaining my steady schedule of stupid 3-4 days a week. This is week 7 and I'm still waiting for my legs to get up to speed so I can increase duration. I may need to take more rest days. Hard to get endorphins if you're resting.

Yes, but once you are on the list of bidders, your competitors are alerted to your interest. Folks who are after the thrill of the win rather than paying what they think is right will keep pumping up their bid to stay ahead. Much better to lull them to sleep and then strike at the end. The esnipe fee is very reasonable and entirely worth it. Or snipe it yourself if you are able. That is a real adrenaline rush, slipping the bid in with just seconds to go.

Yes, but many bidders enter individual bids manually, and a last second bid doesn't give them time to react and up it. If an opposing bidder is using the auto-bidding, though, I would assume that the sniping is completely negated if it's under the max auto bid; ebay wouldn't be having that.

It's got 95 views and 6 watchers so far. But I think on the first day, there were 4 watchers in just the first 24 hours. I would post the link here for curious folks, but not sure if that violates a rule. If you're really curious, search "Bianchi Colubmus SLX Campagnolo" on the bay.

It's all a fun game, but I'm just looking to get a camera.

And speaking of cameras, I landed on the Panasonic LX100. I will try to venture to a nearby store to handle it to seal the deal, but I'm really not seeing any other clear option.

Sniping works just like putting in a maximum bid yourself that is higher than the current high bid. Whether you do it yourself or by esnipe. You can often watch the bids escalate in the last seconds as other folks' maximums kick in and are superseded by your own. Of course, just as you say, there is no time for manually inserted higher bids after the sniping bid is entered. But sniping is still advantageous even if everyone is doing it since you use the amount you are actually willing to pay. Other folks, seeing no obvious competition, may be tricked into placing a low maximum bid in hopes of stealing it.

Yep. I watched a vintage Aiwa Walkman similar to the model Marty McFly used just to see how it would go. Someone started the bidding early and it got up to 40 bucks real early. Then it got up to 100 in the last few days and in the last few seconds, boom, 200 bucks.

So for my sake, it would be nice if someone would bid early. But to keep the price down for yourself, and to avoid mental anguish, deciding its max worth to you and setting up a sniper bid is the best policy.

I put the max I'm willing to spend within the last 30 seconds of the ending, and call it done.

I know, Phil Dunphy had a particularly hard time there.

Really, there's a market for stuff like my old aiwa walkman?

Okay, I get that if I google some running or cycling stuff I get ads that correspond to that, but I just ate a small bag of Cheddar & Sour Cream chips and now there is an ad for that on BF. What the hell internet? #IAlwaysFeelLikeSomebodysWatchingMe

A good plan, but there is still time for someone to see it and adjust his bid. Not everybody puts the max they are willing to spend and decides to change their bid. 6 sec doesn't offer that possibility.
