Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shaving

Recently, I've been getting more into road cycling. It was inevitable that at some point the idea of leg shaving would come to mind. I've heard all the arguments for shaving (aerodynamics, road rash, massages, vanity, fashion, fitting in with the cool kids, etc...), however, since I don't race, nor plan to race, I'm not a very hairy guy, and no matter what I do I'll never be cool or fashionable, I see little point in it.

Having said that, I was just wondering what other non-racers do in regard to leg shaving.

Thanks.

I've never even considered it. No thanks. But I know plenty of people who do, and I understand the benefits.

I'm not a racer, and have little opinion on what racers should do, but cannot see any reason to do it as a non-racer.

Try it. It'll grow back if you don't like it. Then you'll know.

It removes weight. Any amount will make you faster. Physics don't lie.

I do and I dont race. I dont have a lot of body hair to begin with, like your self, but I hate body hair so I shave it off. Call it what you want. Being a poser, giving in to peer pressure, aero benefit...etc. Who cares. Personally, I think it looks better than some hairy leg and I would shave my legs even if I gave up cycling tomorrow. Some people will give you a hard time for it, while others will accept it and majority wont care or notice. Do it if you want to, Dont if you dont.

Blessed/cursed with little in way of body hair. [Shrug]

Do it if you feel so inclined. Don't worry about what others say.

It makes you look sexier when wearing short skirts. Now if you also decide to shave your chest you may also be entitled to show some cleavage.

People make too big a deal about it.

IMO- the two best reasons are no hair pulling when you get massages, and it's easier on you if you crash -- either road rash or pulling off tape. If either of these or any other reason has you wanting to shave, do so, if not, don't, but it's not important enough either way to talk about.

Enough troubles shaving the face and sometime twice a day, the legs are not worth the bother, and then stubles appear if you don't shave often and then it will be everyday! Oh no!
However it is helpful if you crash to minimize infection?
Yes it is no fun to peel off the sheets in the morning the days after a crash with hair pulling as well!

I don't race and only do around 100 miles/wk and shave because: 1. If/when I do crash I'm ready. 2. It feels better while wearing Lycra while riding and a wool suit while working. 3. There's nothing like freshly shaved legs in the sheets!0

I don't race, don't shave, and do about 225 miles a week. Never even been tempted. AFAIC, you can't scream poseur any louder than shaving your legs and riding through the residentials. Maybe it makes the shaved fit in better in the rest of the weekend poseur peleton, but the notion of any quantifiable performance increase is facepalm-worthy.

IMO the only thing worse than making a fuss about whether to shave or not is making a fuss about whether someone else (male) does.

How often do you guys shave. I don't have a lot of hair but it grows extremely fast. About a day or two after I shave, the hair grows short and hard like needle. My legs skins feel itchy all the time even though I lotion them a lot. The only way to stop it is I have to shave every other day or no shaving at all

Have you ever tired it? In my mid-20s I had heart surgery to correct a congenital defect. Prior to the procedure my entire body below my neck was shaved, except for my arms, which, of course, is where they put all the tape, but that's another story. I have been shaving my legs during riding season ever since. It just feels so nice.

I shave for one reason , road rash . I did not do it the first road rash and it was painful to clean the area properly with all those hair . Never again .
