Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

road rash -> freckles

I had this pretty drastic road rash 3 yrs ago that is now heavily freckled. Is that typical? I have no shortage of other freckles, so maybe it only happens if you're already predisposed that way.

Are you sure it is not just the contrast between scar tissue and normally tanned skin? The scar tissue often won't tan.

You mean like my right shin?

Combination of crashes, and playing basketball on asphalt courts when I was younger.

It can do a bunch of weird things - my patches of road rash tend to grow longer and darker hair after healed.

I've got a good spot on my right shin and it does have a "freckeled" appearance. Abrasions like that are a lot like burns and as the skin grows back it may be quite different than the OEM. Mine is less than a year old and when I ride it turns a really bright purple.

Any trauma to the skin can cause pigment to be distributed unevenly when it heals. Probably, over time, it will even out, but sometimes not.

I got shot under the right armpit point blank with a paint pellet gun in 1983. The overpressure from the impact broke a lot of blood vessels which blew through my skin, leaving what looked like a perfectly round scrape. (It was as weird an injury as it sounds, and hurt like hell because the skin there is so thin and delicate. Looked exactly like road rash, but that's not what caused it. ) I have a round freckle there about the size of a quarter.

So, your freckles may fade, or not, but it's normal to have uneven pigment after something like this.
