Recommend Wireless Bike Computer w/Heart Rate Monitor

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Recommend Wireless Bike Computer w/Heart Rate Monitor

GF has a new bike and needs a computer to go with it.

Speed, Distance, Time, Duration and Heart Rate Monitor functions.

Any recommendations what to get or not to get?

REI has this Cateye Strada CC-RD420DW on sale currently.

CatEye Strada CC-RD420DW Digital Wireless Bike Computer - REI.com'

Thanks.

Cateye Stealth 50. And then any heart rate monitor that is ANT+ (I use the MIO Link which is ANT+ and Bluetooth), pair with a speed/cadence sensor and you are set.

I'd be real tempted to get a Garmin instead. Too bad it's almost twice as much. But my feeling is that there's a hell of a lot more value in having your HR recorded over the course of a workout and being able to use that data later, than in just knowing what your HR is at any given point in time.

If you don't already have an REI credit card, they'll give you a $100 gift certificate for getting one. I think you can cancel it after you get the gift card. That brings the computer prices a lot closer together...

Get a Garmin Edge. YMMV but I had nothing but trouble with the Cateye computers I've tried. They are difficult to pair to other devices like a HRM and my laptop refused to recognize the computer when it was plugged in via USB. The Garmins are easy to use and have the Garmin Connect website to track your performance.

If you're going to spend $89 for a bike computer, why not spend a tiny bit more and get one with GPS and Ant+? You should be able to find an older Cateye Stealth 50 for that price, along with a cheap Ant+ HRM strap; maybe add speed/cadence sensor down the road if you want. Lezyne and Sigma Rox also have similar bare bones GPS units these days too. My 2c.

PS I have a Stealth 50 going on 2 yrs and has been very reliable.

Longer battery life is wonderful. The only way to get it is to dispense with the GPS function as the Strada does. Which is fine. I've had very good service from Cateye equipment.

However the Stealth does give you GPS and uploads to Strava, TrainingPeaks, and Cateye Atlas for review and analysis. Like so many GPS gadgets its battery life is only about 10 hours.

I prefer long battery life and to be able to upload my data to a website like TrainingPeaks for analysis. To get both the long life and upload features it's a whole 'nother level of cost.

I have a Sigma Rox 5.0 that is very basic and does what you need. I like it, but will move to something more sophisticated on my next bike.

I vote for either a Garmin Edge or she can go with the VivoActive which has all the same functions plus you can use it as an everyday watch plus it has other features as well like running, swimming, golf, and treadmill. The Forerunner 920XT is pretty sweet as well but a bit pricey.

I have the Cateye like the one linked in the OP. I like it and have never had any trouble with any part. I use the HRM every ride.

Thanks for the input. She wants something basic and is not interested at this point in GPS or tracking her workouts. She is mainly a runner so she has a wrist watch heart rate monitor.

She just wants something to track her time and distance, being able to leave her wristwatch at home and still gauge her effort is bonus.

I've heard good things about Sigma and Cateye both but have no personal experience with them.

It might be a lot cheaper to get her a handlebar mount for her running watch?
