Opinions of Fuji Roubaix

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Opinions of Fuji Roubaix

LBS has one in my size for $1000. Carbon fork and carbon stays make it attactive.

Seem like a good bike and a good price?

Test ride it before setting your heart on it. I think Fuji's have rather small headtubes in proportion... which is why I couldn't get my Fuji Roubaix Pro for $950... mmmm 853 steel.

The '05's are aluminum and at $1000, are a pretty good deal. Prior to '05, the Roubaix Pro came in 853 steel and could be gotten at closeout time for somewhat less than than $1000, which was a fantastic deal.

Take it for a ride. If you like it, thats a great price. Paid 1150 for mine. No complaints whatsoever.

Did a lot of shopping around. Even at 1150 I thought it was quite a bit of bike.

Not a bad price for it. Like LordOpie & zing28 say, take it for a ride to be sure it fits. Take a few other bikes for a ride for comparison.

I've got an '03 Roubaix Pro (853, baby!) that's been great to ride. I'm sure the Fuji aluminum frames are good too. Fuji offer some pretty good value bikes.

Is the only difference between the '05 Roubaix and Roubaix Pro the double on the Pro?

I looked at some Fuji bikes at a LBS that were at great prices. I looked up the wheelset on roadbikereview.com and saw that the Ritchey wheels that came with it got horrible reviews. I went back to the store and saw that only the Fuji's with that wheelset were marked down. It doesn't matter really which Richey wheels it comes with; both sets of Ritchey wheels on the review site are low, so make sure it's not one of those sets (which it probably is). It's a design they make with an offset rim and the wheel is made with parts that are not standard; hence, spokes and nipples are not available aftermarket. A lot of the reviews claim the rear wheel will make noise after 300 miles or so.

My plan was to still get the bike and throw the wheelset that came with it on a city errand bike and get "real" wheels for the Fuji. If you did something like that; it doesn't have to be all at once. The Fuji bikes are a great value.

I read those reviews on the wheelset too (mine are Ritchey comp hubs, OCR Pro rims, 28 spoke F&R). I bought the bike for the frame fit & comfort, with the intention of replacing the wheels when they started causing problems (paying about $900 for the bike probably helped make this decision!). Since then, I've put a few thousand miles on the rims and they've been no problems (I'm about 225lbs, so should be giving them a bit of a workout!).

In any case, I think the '05 has an Alex wheelset of some sort. I might be wrong, but I wouldn't think that a high percentage of the wheelsets on $1000 bikes are going to have sensational reviews.

one of our regular customers brought in his 853 roubaix pro, which he bought from us last year for a fitting. it says 54cm on the seat tube, but when measured C-C, it's a 51cm, and thus, a bit small for him, standover-wise, but as far as reach goes, it's spot on. i think all of the fujis run a bit small, because the seat tubes stick up above the top tube usually about 2-3cm, and they measure C-T of the seat tube. so the posters above who recommended a test ride is dead on.

as far as the ritchey wheels go, the wheels that come on the roubaix use regular spokes and nipples with the Off Center Rim. i can't say what the protocol wheels use as i haven't had any experience with them. the guy who has the roubaix pro logs a lot of miles, in both commuting and regular group rides, and hasn't complained about them once.

I got an '05 Roubaix Pro a few months ago and couldn't be happier for the $1000 I paid. After riding the allez elite, r700, and various treks, this one just felt good to me. Test them all out first and good luck.
