Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

LOVE my FCR4!!

Just took delivery of my new Giant FCR4. Just love it! Compared to my comfort bike, it is a dream to ride. Needs a few minor personal adjustments, but that's no problem.Does feel like I might get a nose bleed fom how high the seat sit tho. I'm 6'3" and with the seat as fardown as it'll go on a size large (55.5) frame, I'm on tip toes.Took overpass today much easier and in an higher gear than my comfort bike. With a 44-55 cadence, average 50% more mph. 18 minute ride took only 11 and wasn't over worked at all. Last half mile or ride seems like 3 uphill, wears me out usually. Have nothing but good to say so far. Will let you know how it does later after a full day of riding!

If it ain't broke, you're not trying hard enough! - Red Green

Congratulations.
Do you have short legs? 55.5 seems kind of small (rather than large) to me.

Size L frame with a 6'3" rider:

I have a hard time thinking that having saddle all the way down puts you in anywhere close to decent pedaling position.

You're not supposed to be able to put your feet down while seated. You should be able to straddle the top tube comfortably, but if you're sitting down and able to put both feet down, your seat is way too low.

Intersting: I am 6'3" and ride a 63cm road frame. That would probably be a "Large" in an off-road frame. I don't know the metric equivalent as I have never riden an off-road frame.

There are two measures of seat positon:

1. While sitting on the bike place your heel on a pedal and place it at 6'O Clock. There should be a slight bend in the knee

2. With pedals at 3 O'clock and 9 o"Clock and balls of feet on pedals, a plumb line dropped from the front of your knee should touch the pedal spindle.

Just a couple of alignment measures. I would go in to my LBS and let the lbs-guy eyeball your fit to be sure.

Wait are you on your tip toes to the ground or to the pedals?

Ahh right...there is the thing. Your saddle height has NO bearing on your relation to the ground. It is set based on the length of your legs and should be set so that you have proper extension during the pedal stroke. I can barely even touch the ground on either of my bikes if they are vertical and I am on the saddle.

You told us 8 days ago your saddle was all the way down and your feet were able to reach the ground while you were seated.

Why did you feel the need to come back and revive this thread to reiterate this statement? I and others have pointed out that your saddle position is very likely wrong if you can touch the ground while in the saddle.

Proper saddle height is dictated by your full leg extension. I must dismount my saddle to be able touch the ground on my bike.

You shouldn't be able to touch the ground when you're on your seat.

Not unless you were riding a Electra.

If your feet can touch the ground, there's no way they're getting full extension when they're on the pedals.

I bought a Giant FCR4 about six weeks ago to replace a Giant Cypress DS that the local dealer never should have sold me in the first place. Like scubajim, I got the large frame, which has great geometry for my 6'0" long torso body. My seat is raised up a couple inches, I've added handle bar extenders so I can vary my grip, and I'm really enjoying this bike thus far. The 120psi tires are wonderful. Overall, this is one great bike for the money.
