Sapim CX-Ray spokes and hex alloy nipples in transit....
Frame somewhere between Warsaw, Poland and here......

I look forward to this build. 62.5 x 60 c-c frame made with EL-OS tubing, 1990 model, according to the man himself (sent info to Zullo)

Here's my Ritchey Road Logic 2.0. Been riding it as my primary road bike for the last 4 seasons. It will need a bit of a refresh this winter - the bars need to be replaced - and it will probably get some new (lighter) wheels, but I'm planning on it being back as my primary road bike next year.

The Soma Pesadero is intriguing. It has a "sport" geometry but set up for Paul center mount brakes (or dual pivot) and will fit a 40c tire. It'd look nice with a silver Potenza group, silver Paul brakes and Soma 38c tanwalls.

I have this coming in around 1 month since I decided to not build a gravel frame. Instead of building, I decided to take on another project that requires some small brazing of an old Columbus tubed Schwinn road frame to get it into shape for paint and modernization.
Looking forward to moving over most of the components from my current gravel frame and getting some new wheels.

853 main triangle. Shaped stays. Cool mix of brazed rear triangle and tig'd main triangle.

Maybe not modern but I’m super excited to be getting one of my old bikes back. It was my pride and joy and scrapped together the dollars for the frame and parts in the early ‘90’s to build it as a True frankenbike. It’s currently packed up and on its way to me from A friend in Whistler BC who I left it with sometime around 2003. Going to repaint and rebuild. Will go great with the Speedvagen!

Also, after almost a year and a half I tore down the SV, checked the bearings, waxed, scrubbed, etc. some usual wear and tear scratches but overall still in pretty fine shape!

It isn't steel and it isn't modern (in concept) but it was built of an equally shiny metal in 2011. My ti TiCycles road fix gear of my avatar. Basically a to-die-for late '80s race bike in an alternative world where gears were never invented and racers still stopped and flipped wheels to change gears.

"Jessica J", now painted on her fork blade but her name since conception.

This bike is pure road. Modified horizontal dropouts, not track ends so the entire 2"+ of slot is usable and I can run any 1/8" cog made, 12-24 without messing with the chain. (Dropout opens down so the wheel can be as close the seat tube as a vertically dropped bike.) 2 minutes to flip a wheel. I can unscrew a cog and put on different one in about 5 minutes if I have my act together. I will ride it to Crater Lake and around next month (fires permitting) using 17, 24 and 12 tooth cogs.

Jessica J was inspired by Jessica, a dumpster bound frame for sale at an "as-is" sale by a local shop. A Reynolds 501 tubed Peugeot that had been hit hard by an SUV (obviously). Jessica hit the road with $105 out of pocket with wheels and parts I had on hand. Mismatched probably Bridgestone fork. Very quick steering. Fun!, fun!, fun! Most fun since my race bike 30 years before. But I would not take it into the hills for a very rational fear of breaking the frame given its history. So after 7000 miles I ordered the dream frame based closely on Jessica except the BB pushed up so I could ride the 175s my knees love and those dropouts for 60 year old friendly fix gears.

Oh, the builder can do a very nice TIG'd steel frame also. I have 3 steel stems from him. Also repairs and modifications on 2 steel bikes of mine. 2 steel forks (including Jessica J's). I won't go the TIG'd steel route on a frame. I like lugs too much. But his traditionally crowned forks are a joy. (Aside - my Mooney now has a lugged steel seatpost. Nitto.)

I have only 2000km on the bike so far. But it has been nothing but a pleasure to ride. Climbs great, rock solid out of the saddle. Descends awesome, I have hit 90km/h and it is like on rails. The wheels are a nice fit and the oxic layer brakes well, unless I really need a hard stop from 90 to slow. Then it feels spongy on the back brake, but my rim brakes on the Trek Madone had that same issue barreling down the same descend.
The finish on the frame is gorgeous and the white is like a pearl white.
This is my second steel bike and I'm loving them more than my carbon rides I had before. Maybe I'm just getting old and nostalgic.

In 2005, I got on the waitlist for a Vanilla. I took delivery in 2007. I had it resprayed in 2014.

Second photo is the initial build with Campagnolo 10s Chorus and Record bits. This was the mid 2000s edition of each groupset.

More recently, those components had started to wear out (keep in mind they lasted 11 years). The original Record RD's carbon faceplate cracked and bent my RD hanger (not happy about this, but again, it was an 11 year-old RD). Also, I'm a smaller rider. When I started riding with 9-speed Shimano, I remember having to really twist my left wrist to upshift the front derailleur. I had trouble reaching the large levers in the drops. 10-speed Campagnolo was an improvement in this regard and the smaller levers fit my hands a bit better. However, over time, Shimano and SRAM made their levers adjustable, while Campy levers could only be adjusted to fit larger hands. I decided to go back to Shimano, and I got a the Ultegra R8000 groupset. The first photo is the same bike with that groupset and new wheels.

The old wheels were Pacenti SL23 rims to Alchemy hubs. Alchemy later went out of business; they were a one person shop, and they had a product recall due to faulty axles or bearings. The owner stepped up ... but the process bankrupted Alchemy. Wheels Manufacturing bought them later on, and sold their hubs for a while, but they recently discontinued both sales of new hubs and support for existing ones. This meant I couldn't get replacement axles (the originals were very light and they got bent) or a replacement specialized bearing for inside the freehub body. I went with White Industry hubs laced to Boyd Altamont ceramic rims.

Overall, this is still an excellent bike. She can accept 28mm tires on modern rims, albeit with not a huge amount of clearance. I push the pedals and she flies. I just got a new carbon gravel bike. That bike is also excellent. However, I seriously feel like this frame is competitive with any current carbon bike. Obviously it's not an aerodynamic frame, but that doesn't stop me from keeping up with riders on carbon bikes. The ride feel is definitely different from carbon. I haven't ridden my carbon bike as much, but right now, I can't say I strongly prefer either material. Both subjectively feel very good.

The groupset is not night and day different in terms of overall function, but I do feel like there's an incremental improvement - you'd expect that given 10+ years development time. For me, as a smaller rider, the hand position and lever reach is much better with Shimano's levers, even though the lever bodies are bigger than 10s Campy. Note that current Campy hydraulic levers now have reach adjustment. I'm out of the Campy-sphere in general because of the lever reach issue plus general parts availability. However, that's just a preference, and I'd definitely consider Campy in the future.

I don’t think I’ve posted this yet - my 1995 Tange Prestige Ultimate - Faux Titanium finish. Built at the Fairly bike factory in Taiwan. Shimano 600 tricolor groupset. I’ve modernized it a bit and eventually will change out the threaded fork to a threadless setup. Rides like a dream.
