Zwift, is that all there is?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yep, some will 'get' it and some won't - horses for courses, I reckon.

Up untl I started riding Zwift on a dumb traner, around April last year, I dreaded the trainer - full stop. Zwift makes riding a trainer a more immersive experience - there are structured workouts, races and bunch rides where you can interact even more with users from all over the world - very cool..

With a power meter and/or a smart trainer, it opens up to an even better experience.

I will again get a lot of use out of it this coming winter.

cheers

Zwift would be cool if it was like the game "Road Rash," on the Sega Genesis that came out so many eons ago. Dat' Wuz Dope.

I remember that game... Hey, you trying to pass me? Bam! Tire iron to the face. The moto equivalent of being Cinzano'd.

The potential for Zwift is limitless. I would not be surprised if in the future there are more optional "game like" features added for those that would enjoy them. I could see a Mario Cart like area where there are short races (fun intervals?) with serious power ups.

Not sure anybody addressed what maybe the OP was asking. I.e. How much does the Zwift DEMO mode reveal about the paid Zwift experience? I don't have Zwift yet so I can't answer.

Everything, the demo is exactly the same except limits you to 40k of riding. If you hate the demo, you'll hate the paid version, unless unlocking new wheels and frames would make this something you enjoy.

Ok good to know. So the mentioned group rides, races, new courses and sufferfest plugins all work in demo mode?

Yea, pretty sure that's correct. It just locks you down after 40k total. The only new course at this point is Richmond, and it runs on certain days of the week so everyone is either on the imaginary island, or on the Richmond 2015 course. When I did the demo for a day I was on Richmond, so once they add additional courses it will probably be the same deal.

The group rides and races are just people agreeing to start at the same time, nothing special there, any random stranger could see them going by and do a u-turn/join them. I'd imagine there are facebook groups or whatever that organize them.

The workout plugins should also work in the free trial, but I've started paying for Zwift and I can't say I tried any before I subscribed, you just drop them into a folder and select them while in the in-game workout menu.

my Bkool pro trainer is old enough (made before Oct 2014) that it won't work with Zwift. However, I love the BKool program with the smart trainer and the ability to do group rides and put in my own routes.

Love Zwift. Riding alone can be boring but joining up for a group ride is great. If I ride alone I just do one of the workouts.

Group rides and races can be found here: zwiftcalendar.com

I did a few races and enjoyed them. I never 'just ride' on the trainer, most of the times I am doing a structured workout and in those cases I don't bother with Zwift.

Here is race and group ride calendar: Zwift Community Group Ride and Race Calendar

Yeah there are plenty of races. Red ones are the hard ones others are more like group rides. Each of them has descriptions anyway.

Okay, but those are not like official Zwift organized/sanctioned races, right? I mean, there's no timing, or results, or requirements to use comparable equipment, e.g. smart trainers or powermeters, is there? Is there a practical distinction between how they and a group ride functions? Where are terms (length, duration) of the races listed?

My last race was a 'C' race around the Watopia hilly course. Big pack quickly became a not so big pack after the first hill. It stayed that way from there onwards, there were a few attacks but they were brought back. On the fourth lap I attack on the last small hill near the end and go off the front. My lead is growing but my legs start to go away. I dial it back a bit and keep going but I'm caught by three riders. Two of them fall behind but one of them passes me near the end. I dial it back up and beat him on the sprint to the finish line. Get off my bike, powerwalking around the house as if I had just become the World Champian. When I go check the results I do not see my name there and realize that the race was actually five laps.

chaadster: There are results but they don't seem completely accurate, they just make a Strava segment and go off the times there. I wouldn't call them 'officially sanctioned' but they are organized. The lengths are posted, usually between an hour and ninety minutes. No check at all on equipment so everyone out there could be cheating for all I know. Good fun to be had unless you take it too seriously.

Okay, yeah, thanks PepeM. Those are just the informal group rides; call 'em races, okay, but I'll wait for Zwift to put races together, which will be more interesting to me, I think. I mean, any group ride could be a race by those standards.

It does explain where all those stupid segments on Strava for Zwift rides are coming from, though. So a segment is being made for every "race" each day? If not, how could seeing the leaderboard be of any real help if it's all-time?

Yeah, that's all a little too "wild" for me, but I know that Zwift are looking to introduce a racing platform (officially organized and/or sanctioned) which should produce a much cleaner experience. I'll probably wait for that, though I definitely get the appeal of being able to race now.

Because some people love it and some do not. You know like 1000 people like red and another thousand like blue. There is nothing to "get" here. Matter of personal preference.

That is total and utter BS/insult.
Again, it wasn't me talking about "not getting it," it was the OP who said they didn't get it. But you're right, there is nothing to "get" here: Zwift is the most dynamic, interactive, and social experience you can have on a home trainer.

If you prefer to stare at a blank wall...fine. Who cares. Crush that sh*t, bro. But please, don't act like that's more interesting or "get-able" than using Zwift, because it ain't. Don't act like watching Sufferfest videos (which I believe are called that because of the awful music they subject you to) is less repetitive or tedious than Zwift, because it ain't. In fact, there ain't nothin' you can do on your home trainer that is less repetitive or less tedious than Zwift. If Zwift is red, there is no blue which to choose. Do you understand?

Oh, and please don't try to slam Zwift because your computer runs on electricity (which was exactly one of the OP's "criticisms"). Sooooo lame.

Well then they could be called informal group rides were people are trying to get to the line first rather than all together I guess. New segments are created for each race, yes. I do agree a properly Zwift organized race system being implemented will be much better, but the current system is not too bad if you don't take it too seriously. I just made a few of them as they turned out to be pretty good workouts.
