Is there a dumber term than cockpit?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't get why anyone would use that. A bike has a stem, bar and brifters.

"Pulling the trigger" might top that.

Squeeze the trigger, if you want to hit the target.

well the definition is:

"from cock1 + pit1. In the early 18th century the term was in nautical use, denoting an area in the aft lower deck of a man-of-war where the wounded were taken, later coming to mean ‘the “pit” or well in a sailing yacht from which it was steered’; hence the place housing the controls of other vehicles (sense 1, early 20th century)."

So it fits the meaning as it is where the controls are.

IME it depends on the bike. With some bikes, I have the feeling of being in, rather than on the bike. I like and seek that feeling. I have no idea about why that is.

Isn't the saddle included in that? Or at least the seat post?

Agreed. Cockpit is stupid for a bike.

Why wasn't this a poll?

I thought the term was a reference to the location of the joystick, which is also kind of dirty

Why is it called a seatpost when you clamp a saddle to it?! Shouldn't it be called a saddlepost?

Excellent! A perfect explanation.... as we can assume that the steering would be accomplished by a lead man... or head "cock". Which makes me wonder what should we call the control area on a "girls bike"?

Hey Dave, come on now. There are children in this forum and there is no need to bring down the forum to sexual innuendos and double entendres :-)

I don't care much for cockpits, but if we have to live with them, well, I get to have fun with these "cockpits" on one bike. It has two. Swapping them takes about 5 minutes. (Different bars, quill stems, levers and calipers. It's a completely different bike after the swap.)
