Need help finding warm shoe covers for big feet
Hello BikeForums,
I have size 48E Shimano road shoes and I need some recommendations for warm shoe covers that will actually fit. I've had some in the past that were "L/XL" but they were not XL enough and barely zipped until the zipper broke after only a few uses :( So any help would be much appreciated! Thanks! |
I too have size 48's. I use Pearl Izumi soft shell shoe covers. They fasten with Velcro so they are easier to fasten than with a zipper. They are pretty warm and durable. I hated dealing with squeezing into covers with a zipper just never seemed to be enough room for my monster feet.:p
BTW I have them in XXL |
I've gone to wearing stretchy, very light, thin neoprene toe covers (from my full coverage booties). The toe covers are quite effective down to about 30F for me (and I am 59 and no longer hot blooded at all). So it would be easier to find toe covers that fit than full coverage booties that fit.

Interested to see what turns up as well. I ended up buying a pair of rain/snow boots because wet and cold is such a common thing here and I'm yet to find a cover that's easy to use, durable, effective, and fits.

I am in the same boat here, 48's, and to top it off, I have Reynaud's syndrome which mostly affects my fingers but my toes get it as well. Have never been able to find any type of cover that works for me. I have the Pearl Izumi covers with the velcro in the back but they don't seem to work that well for me. Since I ride a normal SPD pedal, I broke down and bought a pair of the Specialized Defroster boots. They are great in cold weather, keeping my feet warm into the single digits with a normal pair of socks on. Wind and water proof which have been fully tested by walking my bike home in foot deep snow for about half a mile. Feet were dry and still warm.

Follow-up: I found good toe warmers :)

These fit *snugly* over my shimano 48E shoes but they help out a lot. Main downside is that once they are on, it becomes very difficult to tighten the toe velcros on the shoe without a lot of finagling. But a hell of a lot better than freezing my damn toes in ~45-50F (before wind chill) rides and they seem to be doing OK at staying out of the way of the cleat. Attached: crappy iphone quick pics, and yes I know my cleats are filthy:cry:http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=512198http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=512199http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=512200 :crash: |
Oh.. if you were looking for toe covers I might have recommended the Lizard Skins Dry-Fiants(XL).. fit well and likewise have helped in the 40-50 range.

Or buy winter shoes. I got some on sale a few years ago. Good decision for me.

I don't know what you small-footed folks are complaining about.:innocent: I have found that the DeMarchi XXL manages to fit on my size 51 shoes just fine. The neoprene may be a little thinner for the stretching, but it's much better than the aluminized bubble-wrap and duct tape I had to use before I found these covers.
