Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How do I assess the used market value of my bike?

I have a bike I want sell, but do not know how to price it for sale. The short story is I took a chance on a too aggressive frame and it immediately did not work out (aggravated/injured a neck disc issue). Less than 10 rides on it last summer before the injury. I love the ride and handling, and thought I might keep it and just raise/flip up the stem. But I really should get a bike purpose-designed for a better riding position.

Would like advice on pricing the whole bike, and then just the frameset (I could then just swap over components). None of the shops in my area take trades, but I also assume I would loose my shirt even if they did.

What I have:
2015 54cm Scott Addict SL
2015 Force22
Zipp Service Course SL stem
Zipp Contour SL carbon bars
Ritchey Superlogic seatpost
Selle Italia SLR Flow saddle
Pacenti SL23 w/ White Industries, Conti GP 4000S II

How much did you pay?

This puts the MSRP in excess of $10,000
Scott Addict SL ? first ride review - BikeRadar USA

This looks like a similar bike on E-Bay that has been listed 3 times for $4500, and did not sell yet.
2015 Scott Addict SL Carbon Fiber SRAM Red 22 11 SP Road Bike 52cm 13 Lbs | eBay

I'm seeing Addict SL frames that have sold for $1600 to $1725
New Scott Addict SL Frame Set 52cm Small HMX Net Carbon BB86 Road Bike | eBay
2015 Scott Addict SL Frameset 54cm for Mechnical | eBay

And one that is currently being bid on, will sell tomorrow afternoon.
2015 Scott Addict SL Frameset 49cm | eBay

If you paid anywhere close to MSRP for the bike, expect to loose your shirt, and a few layers of skin too.

If you like your wheels and component group, I'd hunt down a frame that would be suitable, and move your parts over.

Expect to sell around 50-60% of MSRP for a 1-2 year old bike in pristine condition. This assumes you have lots of patience and don't need the money immediately. If you want to sell it quickly, 40-50% of MSRP.

(I've sold countless high end bikes, both locally and on eBay)

Try adjusting the cockpit as you mentioned and see how this works for you before selling this bike. You have mentioned that you love the way that it rides, just the neck pain that you experience. Or maybe trade with some one for perhaps a Cannondale supersix evo that fits you better?

General rule of thumb: You lose half the MSRP when you wheel it out of the shop and depreciate by 10% each year after.

The equation I use is

{Price paid / 2 - (10% each year possessed) - (2% each surface scratch)** x 0.85= Current value.

Sell the frame, you'll lose less money than the complete bike.

I've found that the bicycle blue book website tends to track closely to eBay completed sales. The more expensive your bike, the more you'll lose selling it used, too.

Have you already tried various fitting strategies to see if it'll work for you?

Awesome, thanks for the input! I really don't have anywhere near MSRP, so I should be ok. And I do like my components so I have been thinking about just parting with the frameset. I only have a few mm of steerer tube left to raise the stem. Flipping will give me 6 degrees = a few more mm. Have not tried yet because the neck injury took a while to resolve and I had a bicep surgery along the way to fix an old injury. Still working on the recovery from that one. Yeah, falling apart a little with much more time to consider my setup than actually ride.

What the bluebook tells me is to never sell my bike. No way I'm selling a complete Campy Chorus Merlin Cyrene for ~$700.

There are some very steep stems available and can easily get the bars much higher that way. I would try that next.

find similar bikes on craigslist, and divide the price by half

or find comparable bikes that would interest you, whether canyon or ridley or etc...how much would you be willing to pay for those?

I agree that is a gorgeous rig - do your best to make it work before giving up.

Thank goodness you didn't go too crazy on upgrades before you determined that the frame wouldn't work for you.

Considering that there is no formal way to document used bike selling values other than for those that sell on ebay (and then does shipping cost get included?) my opinion having inspected some values in that Bluebook is that it is utterly worthless. Perhaps I simply live in an area where bikes are in demand but for the bikes I checked I'd say the real values are nearly twoce its estimates.

You're going to get what someone is willing to pay. I've been through this numerous times. Be prepared to take a large loss.

I agree with gsa103, sell the frame. the frame is beautiful you should get a sort of decent amount for it. Since you like the components, getting a different frame makes more sense. Whoever said Supersix Evo - not sure why you would say that, the geometry is similar to the addict. Not that the OP asked, but I would look at a Scott Solace (too bad about the paint) or Cannondale Synapse.

Thanks for all the responses. Now I am torn between making the bike work by exercising the little bit more play I have in the stem/spacers, and getting a new bike or frame. I am actually recovering from a surgery right now and cannot ride, so maybe I will selling a shot. Can always keep it if I don't get a suitable offer. Solace and Synapse are excellent choices.

Would anyone say that the Trek Emonda could also be a good choice for a bit more relaxed? Better to have a low stem profile on, say, a Solace or have a few spacers on a Emonda? I don't really want a bike that is too "cush", but I do need a taller headtube.
