True. But neither of those people will hear me yell at them, either. Oblivious person is oblivious.
In the situations where people can hear me, I get excellent results from ringing a brass Crane bell to pass. It's much easier than yelling "I'm on your left", and the bell's ring seems to leave those pedestrians with a smile on their face instead of a scowl.

I object to the use of Kickstarter by a company like Knog. It's totally inappropriate platform for an established company with a diverse product line. The stuff about "get it to market faster" is a just a fat lie. Really, you can produce it faster by putting together a Kickstarter campiagn, waiting for funding and then executing their production plan is going to be faster than simply going straight to production.
It does look neat, but I'll wait for it actually to appear via legitimate channels.

I like the bell by the way and probably will get one.

Titanium or Aluminum? Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if aluminum was lighter.
For the "Standard (Aluminum)"
Large Oi, 25g
Small Oi, 18g
Do we need a new thread on how much adding 25g will slow a person down?

.....They now have knock-offs being sold approx $10. I bought one to try it out for myself. Still have not received it yet so I'm really interested to see how it compares. ....
[1] Looks really similar, really close to a carbon copy even the size of the dome and some aspects of the build.
[2] SC (SPURCYCLE) is a tad louder.
[3] the SC trigger is more responsive while the KO is a little soft.
[4] SC is better built all around.
I think for $10, it's a better alternative for any other bell out there that is not SC.

When I have to pass pedestrians I slow down quite a bit and say 'Hey, how's it going? Im gonna be passing you on the left', and I smile. And I never have a problem. I accept that pedestrians are gonna be a bit of a hindrance, so I dont do rides on MUPs if I plan to ride fast or to get a strong workout. Honestly I'd expect a bell ring to confuse many if not most of the people walking.
When I did the C&V ride up in Portland, and the Pedalpalooza BBQ, there was quite a bit of racket of bells ringing. One person on the ride had a bell that dinged with every bump her bike went over.
It is rare that I hear a bell on the bike paths around here.
I think yelling "On your left" is quite demanding. I usually simply say "Hello" (often without response). Then I pass in whatever hole opens up.
I suppose I don't want to give up the greetings... but perhaps I could ding then greet. Somewhat like the Emergency Broadcast Signal on the radio.

I looked into Knog, the maker of the Oi. They will never get a dime of my money.

Any safety equipment violation can (does?) contribute to accidents. If my dear old mother ran-over a cyclists.... I could only hope that her lawyer would keep her 90 year old butt out of jail... if the cyclist failed to have reflectors and/or a bell.
But do I have bells on my bikes? No. No I don't.

They should equip gamin GPS units with a loud audio bell sound. Simply make one of the buttons double up as a bell. Sleek and simple

This is seriously the coolest innovation in bike bells I've ever seen, and I've backed it!
It sounds really good (in the videos) and, most importantly, it DOESN'T LOOK LIKE A BELL! Knog has hit this one out of the park! At last! We can be safe without looking like Freds!
Check it out:

Bike Friday, a well established folding bike company used it to bring their Haul-A-Day to market.
There are big benefits to a company to get $100,000 or more in pre-sales, and in many cases, the buyers are rather patient to wait for the products to eventually show up.
The advantage of working with an "established" company is that one might expect a better level of quality control.
I'm seeing notes that about 10% of Kickstarter projects fail, and not all deliver full refunds. That may actually be an advantage of dealing with an established company like Bike Friday... less of a chance the project will crash and burn.
Anyway, I wouldn't knock an established company unless they have a record of previous failed crowdfunded projects.
Sometimes these crowdfunded items also come at a discount... supposedly, giving benefits to the backers, certainly eliminating the retail level of the equation. But, it also ads risk and benefit for both sides of the equation as final production costs are established.

What you can do is put in a pre-order using Kickstarter to get one of the first batch, and hope it shows up sometime this fall.

I like a good bell. There are often times I wished I had one when on the road bike, like large group rides or centuries. I backed them for 2. I plan on getting a small and a large one. Not sure why someone would object to Knog as a company.
