STRAVA...totally confused
Lat year I bought a Garmin Edge and joined Strava. although uploading rides to Strava was always a bit of a project it always worked. Yesterday I attempted to upload a ride and couldn't. I got a dialog box from Microsoft saying my drivers were "out of date or missing." So, I followed the link only to discover that Microsoft wanted me to buy a $30 package. Last year when I got this message I just ignored it and was able to upload rides as usual. Now I also get some sort of box that shows my Garmin downloads (not rides). But, I can't upload rides. I don't know what is preventing uploads. Any ideas? TIA

Run a virus scan and install anti-adware.

Agreed.
Anything that pops up looking for money, sounds like scamware. Simplest way to upload from Garmin to Strava, is just: 1. Plug Garmin into computer. 2. Use Strava's file upload option, and point it directly to the TCX file in the Garmin. e.g. on my Mac, the file is located in: /Volumes/GARMIN/Garmin/History With a name composed of the date/time and a suffix ".tcx". |
Clicking on the link probably wasn't a good idea, you probably let something additional in. Ransomware of some sort.
Safest answer is flatten and reinstall, but you can try MalwareBytes and/or Spybot Search & Destroy. |
I upload to Garmin Connect and have the GC account linked to Strava. Just have to plug in the Garmin and walk away.

I have the Edge 520, syncing with my phone via bluetooth
Start a ride on the Edge. Hit Stop Ride --> Save Ride on the Edge unit while on the street... seconds later its uploaded to Strava doesnt involve computer |

It really sounds like you have some sort of virus thing going on. Anything that pops up asking you to spend money is most probably b.s.
Plug the Garmin in and go to strava, see if you can upload through strava. |
I get a driver failed pop-up every time I plug my Garmin in. It also uploads to GC no problem I just ignore it.

Rides are automatically uploaded as soon as you press "save ride." |

I don't let Garmin Connect use data on my phone so I have to plug in when I get home. Same difference though. Plug in the Garmin, upload the ride and it appears on Strava in almost real time. -Tim- |
I haven't used Garmin cycling GPS units before, but I have done a lot of work with other Garmin handheld GPS units. Should be able to download all of their drivers for free from their website. https://www8.garmin.com/support/down...ils.jsp?id=591 I think that's all of them.

Strava no longer supports the Garmin drivers so you can't download strait from the Garmin device to Strava. You just need to download the Garmin Connect to your desktop. This will download your rides and will sync with Strava.

OP, this is your answer. Do this, forget drivers, forget manual uploads, the only thing you'll need your computer for is looking at how you did. :) |

My Garmin automatically uploads the ride to Garmin connect. Both Strava and RWGPS automatically upload the ride from Garmin Connect.
Install Garmin Connect and Strava on your phone. Pair the Garmin and your phone with Bluetooth. Log into Strava on a computer and under Social, link your Garmin Connect account. It is set and forget. You'll never have to deal with uploading your rides. If you don't ride with your phone on you, your Garmin will auto pair with your phone when you get back home and upload the ride. |
