Aesthetic question: Ultegra hubs w HED C2's?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Aesthetic question: Ultegra hubs w HED C2's?

So this is a purely aesthetic question:
I found a good deal on some 32h HED C2s - black MSW clincher. I was going to get some Ultegra hubs but would these rims look dumb with black spokes on a grey hub? Would I really be losing that much durability/functionality if I went down to 105s black?

Your call, but I think it looks fine. Do you have 6800 elsewhere on the bike?
I doubt the drop to 5800 would be/feel much different, and I might lean that way if that would match the rest of your group.

"look dumb"??? Really?

Well if you want to go Martha Stewart on it...that would depend on how the rest of the bike is colored.

I'm fat enough to appreciate 32 spokes (at least on the rear wheel).

Which looks more dumb, a 32-spoke wheel you can ride with broken spokes....or the guy with low-count wheels standing by the side of the road trying to beg a ride?

As far as functionality - I've read that there's little difference between 105 and Ultegra - but I like on the Ultegra how the contact points seem "beefier" than the 105.

Nothing remotely wrong with hubs not matching the rest of the wheel (I mean, some are polished silver), and that's a dark grey. Go for it.

Nice looking wheelset. Do you remember the weight?

my Dura Ace 7900 C24s have silver hubs, black spokes...

I think they're very attractive.

Depends on the specific hubset and spoke count....Belgium+ builds can come in as low as 1550 gram IIRC.

A Dura-Ace 9000 build can be done for $900ish.

I have an R45/Belgium+ build as my DD hoops. Roll great. Very nice in crosswindy situations on the Great Plains.

I just wondered the weight of your wheelset.

It's a nice pairing, I just get few requests for a sane build like that. Most guys I know want either the lightest wheelset for a low price, or a wheelset that is "bombproof".

edit; I thought you were the poster I quoted.

24h builds come in on the 1540-1550 end, 32h come in a bit below 1600. Depends on the specifics, ofc.

Catch being the Belgium+ rims are not cheap ($150 each)...and are frequently out of stock in many drilling and finish. To turn a profit you're looking at $800 a set. My R45 build came in at around $1200USD.

Noodle, those aren't actually my wheels. Just an image I grabbed off a Google search. I ride similar wheels with 28f/32r. It would be nice to have a few more drilling options in 5800 and 6800 hubs (especially the front).

That wheel Set is similar to my November Nimbus Ti wheels. Black rim and a shiny gray hub. I think they look really good but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Not sure the Ultegra hubs are dramatically different but more street cred. Nobody really sees them when your dialed up to 400 watts any way.

Hey I'm interested in those HED Belgium C2 hoops, does anyone know if the decals are removable or are they painted on?

Etched or painted logos on Belgium C2...unless you find an older NOS pair (stickers).

The amount of business that Shimano has lost over the years due to stubbornly refusing to offer low spoke count hubs suitable for radial lacing (redesigned as necessary to account for the different stresses) boggles the mind.

I like the way those look, and I'd rock them on my bike if I needed another set of wheels.

Lemme tell you that Tiagra hubs for 10 speed cassettes are very sweet if high spoke count is your thing. Cheap as dirt and beautiful. Well made. A very good deal. The bluish-gray color is a little funky, but nothing horrible.

I have a wheelset on my road bike with 6800 Ultegra hubs and black rims, and they look just fine. That said, the bike has a full 6800 groupset on it, so it's "matchy matchy".
