Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you are a cat 5, and you have completed 10 USCF races, are you automatically a cat 4? Or can you just keep on racing as a cat 5 if you feel you are not ready?

Similarly, if you are a cat 4, and you accumulate enough points, do you have to send an upgrade request, or can you just keep on racing as a cat 4?

How does this work?

Thanks.

Also, if you get points while a cat 5, do those points carry over to when you become a cat 4, for upgrading to 3?

You do not get an auto upgrade from 5 - 4, you actually have to upgrade manually. From 4 - 3 I think it is also manual as with all other cats unless you get an autoupgrade mid season. I have almost enough races to go to cat 4 but I am holding off until the end of the season then I will upgrade... it is your choice.

You can not use cat 5 point for 4 if I remember right.

For going from cat 4 to 3, www.usacycling.org says that you need 20 points in 12 months to be qualified or 25 races, and that 30 points is an automatic upgrade. Does this mean that once you get 30 points, you are no longer allowed to race cat 4?

And if I understand correctly, after I get 10 races done I have to upgrade manually, or else I will remain a cat 5 until I send an upgrade request? Or does it go that after 10 races you are no longer allowed to race cat 5?

you are correct on the 30 point automatic upgrade, but you will probaby still have to ask. The USCF races here rarely seem to get the results turned in, and when you search the USA cycling website, they hardly ever post to your name or license number.
