Just bought a new roadie!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just bought a new roadie!

Hello everyone, as you can see I'm new here.

I commute 11 miles one way to work, and have been doing it in a Specialized Expedition comfort bike. I've since decided that I wanted to move to a road bike, so, I just bought a used one on eBay.

It looks great, but I'd like to know more about it and the components that the bike is composed of.

Here's a link to the auction page (with pictures)

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN%3AIT&rd=1

The frame is Columbus Cromor cromoly (whatever that means)
The components are Shimano 105 (whatever that means) :-)

I did find a fitting guide online. I am 6' 0" and the bike is 58cm, so I think it will fit nicely.

Is there a good FAQ online somewhere where I can get up to speed on this stuff?

Thanks!

well, i'll be honest with you i have pretty damn near that exact same bike. the one you got has better components(i think yours is newer), but the frame looks exactly the same. i've done a few things to mine like change the seat(the one on there made me feel like satan was chewing my a$$ out) and other general fiddlings.

the problem is, my oppinions will probably be of no real use to you because, at 5'8" i'm too freaking short for the bike. i bought mine a while back off an old guy at a yard sale for 20 dollars, canadian money.
as far as a crappy fitting bike goes, this ones pretty good though! i think you'll like it. it seems to ride pretty nice and it shouldn't give you any nasty surprises.

congrats on the purchase, i hope you have many happy miles on it.

Congrats on your upgrade. Those are some nice pics. You gonna upgrade your components now? Add some bling?

it's definitely a retro bike... downtube shifters & old school 105 components. Looks to be well-kept (or well-restored)

I'd also like to know what cromoly is - is it steel?

Good luck with your Miele. I have one of their newer hybrids and I'm very pleased with it, although I'm looking to upgrade to a roadie more like your new one.

You might find some help at the company web site: www. mielebicycles.ca As I remember, they don't post an e-mail address, but they have a lot of technical specs on the site.

That's a great looking bike and a nice deal! Definitely, give us a report on the ride.

Thanks for the replies!

I can't wait to get in the bike and ride. This thing is from the mid - 80's, right? Should I be concerned about weight, given that the frame is steel? Though, my current bike weighs like 40 pounds.. lol

Ya I would definately say mid eighties but they have a nice ride. Alot of the same components as mine. Don't bother with the manufacture for any information the company changed hands a few years back and all the old info is not available. If it's comparible to mine it will probally be 27-28 pounds. It's larger than mine being a 54 or 55.

Dunno 'bout frame size? I'm 6'3" and my frame is 55.5 cm. Make sure you can stand over the top tube with at least an inch between it and the ole family jewels!

If it ain't broke, you ain't trying hard enough! Red Green
