The GCN Show or Bobke's Broomwagon

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The GCN Show or Bobke's Broomwagon

Vote and discuss. As an American I want to like Bob Roll's show better, but I just can't!

Roll is awful just like Kirby. I tend to mute things when they talk.

At first I couldn't get into GCN, but at some point I decided I really like those guys and I've probably watched every video by now, it's a great resource. Haven't ever watched Bobke's but I'm sure GCN is better.

It's like the Top Gear of cycling, except with a far lower budget and no bombastic ape running the program.

I like GCN. Haven't heard of Bobke's show. Now I'll have to go look for it. Thx for the heads-up.

I enjoy The GCN Show and watch it regularly. In fact Dan Loyd was recently doing commentary on a race (I don't remember which one) on Bein Sports. He did a pretty good job. Haven't seen Bobke's but he would have to go some to top GCN.

I looked up the Bobke videos and couldn't watch more than 10 seconds. Production quality was godawful.

I watched the latest Bobke show yesterday, which actually prompted this thread. I kept cringing as he talks while scratching his ear, rubbing his scalp, etc. Maybe it would be better treated as a podcast with just the audio.

One for Bob,
he looks like a troll that would live under a bridge, but his insight and passion is evident.. i will take that over production values any day.. he is not afraid to go well against the grain.. he still sounds like a lttle kind when he gets excited about roadbikes and racing.. and he comes from the 80's era of cycling pre LANCE.. not going there.. i like GCN.. but its so safe, like bobs unkempt edgy style.

Roll is just a strange looking guy, annnoying habits aside. I find him hard to look at.

The shows are completely different, though, with Roll offering more racing analysis and roundup, and GCN being like a cycling variety show.

All said, I prefer the breadth of GCN, though its efforts to provide "in-depth analysis" are almost always flimsy, usually marred by uninformed editorializing by the team, and ill-conceived, poorly executed, psuedo-scientific experiments upon which they make definitive statements. It's really silly, and ai wish they would stop that. Otherwise, they can be fun, and I like riding action, but it's not substantive enough for me to look 'em regularly.

I've never heard of Bobke but judging by the responses here there is no need to look it up.

GCN, on the other hand, is one of the best resources for how tos, news and cycling entertainment available today. Dan, Simon and Matt are the best. I try to catch all their weekly videos. I want one of their kits but they are always sold out.

He's worth a watch, because as a fairly accomplished pro road and MTB cyclist who has hustled his way through the cycling world for thirty-something years, he's got uncommon perspective, which can be informative and interesting. He may be the hardest working guy in the biz.

I can't say I'm a personal fan of Roll, whom I've always found kind of odd since encountering him on the MTB scene in the '90s. He's just kind of raw, or something. However, I respect what he has done both on the on the bike and within the industry.

+1. I enjoy listening to people with a true passion for their sport. Same reason I still enjoy Phil & Paul.

Finally got to watch Bobke TV, is hard to compare his show vs GCN.
GCN has a film crew and , Bob is likely pressing record and then start speaking.
GCN have somewhat of a stage, Bob looks like he was doing his show out of his home.

Over all I did enjoy Bob's show show. If you havent seen it yet check it out.

bit off topic..
is Bob still going t be giving Color commentary on the TDF? most nights i would record the extended coverage so i would get bobs commentary.. i kinda hope Jens Voight sp.. wold start doing announcing gigs.. im not sure Paul and Phil will be dont the play by play much longer.. i kinda like carlton and kelly and Mag Backstead.. on Eurosport 2.. and i think the GCN guy is doing commentary on Eurosport 2.. there are a few former pros i think would be good at that kinda gig.. Levi, LANCE!! , Bobbie J, .. a few others.. Floyd!!!?

GCN is a terrific channel. Americans (and Canadians, me being one) are tough to listen to for any length of time. Sports commentary should always be done by Brits.

I have never seen GCN, but I will add my two cents in defense of Bob Roll-this is a guy who just loves cycling and has interesting things to say about it, I have always enjoyed listening to him and watching as he grins at the other broadcasters busy taking themselves too seriously. He's been there, he's done that, and that gets him some slack from me. I'll check it out.
