Strava and Garmin Connect...

Road Cycling It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. -- Ernest Hemingway

Strava and Garmin Connect...

Do people still use Strava?

I pretty much stopped using strava or anything shortly after I started using it -- but I realize now that I just have no way to compare anything really.

So I have a Garmin Edge 200 that I use and I can sync that up to Garmin Connect and view the rides...but it doesn't seem to upload to Strava automatically (even though I allowed the Garmin app in my Strava).

I have to click "Upload" and then select the file from my Garmin Edge and click upload to put the ride on Strava.

Is there some newer thing than Strava / what are people using to track their rides these days.

In your account on Strava, there's a permission to grant to auto-sync with your Connect.

Connect from the beginning was a half-broken, half-finished Strava "competitor". Garmin made it as their own front-end to kill Strava. But Garmin's code is such crap they failed magnificently at it. Connect is basically best used for getting your rides to Strava. TBH the only thing Connect does that Strava doesn't do 100X better and more reliably is graphing cadence in their respective smartphone apps.

Strava's the only one with any sort of social presence. But to add a bit of functionality... if you use Google Chrome browser, you can add StravistiX.

Other than that, I use:

Alright, thanks guys. I'll try it again next time -- I followed all of the 'syncing' / permission instructions. I probably just didn't wait long enough before clicking 'From Device' and locating the date-stamped file and doing it manually.

I don't use Strava, it doesn't give me anything Connect doesn't. I mean there's fred racing but I'm not into that so Strava really has nothing to offer. Ironically their global heat map is fantastic. Don't have to be a member to use it though.

When I open Garmin Connect I am always reminded of how clean, simple and straightforward the Strava UI is. Garmin Connect is just crude.

Plus as others have pointed out the social aspect makes it a must use tool for me. Strava + Zwift = awesome indoor training.

I tried, tried & failed to get Garmin to sync with Strava.

Now I also manually upload the files- it takes a matter of seconds.

And yes, people do still use Strava.

If you only care about tracking your miles, Connect is all you need. Personally I like seeing what other riders are doing, both friends and Pros. It helps motivate me. That is where Strava comes in.

GC has worked pretty flawlessly with my Strava app... though it also could be the hardware. I've a Fenix 3 which transfers my rides to Strava pretty much before I hang my bike up.

Strava premium does give you a lot more useful data than Garmin Connect. Whether or not it's worth $60/yr. only you can answer.

Well said. For me Garmin Connect >>>>> Strava for the social media aspect, but Garmin Connect >>>>> Training Peaks Premium for training data analysis and planning. Strava has little real value to me, thus I am not a premium member.

*shrug*...I guess I use both. My Garmin uploads through bluetooth onto Connect, then syncs with Strava.

Many people have problems getting GC to sync with Strava.

Initial sync didn't work from a PC for me but worked flawlessly when I set up the initial connection from a phone. Has been working perfectly ever since.
