Bill Walton - 6'11" Bike Nut

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bill Walton - 6'11" Bike Nut

Who knew?

Bill Walton Is All About the Bike - WSJ

Glad to read we are spending retirement the same way - on a bike, unapologetically. Lucky for him, his retirement income exceeds mine. Can't buy a 70 cm frame anywhere, so he only rides custom.

Maybe before your time, but Bill "wrote" a popular book about bicycle riding in 1985: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0553340751

I love this quote from the article... I may have to adopt it as my epitaph.

“While he is not fast, he makes up for it with a great deal of enthusiasm.” - John Howard

an article from back in the day...

BILL WALTON WAS SOME TRAILBLAZER, ON A BICYCLE AS WELL AS ON COURT

riding here in the san diego area, i run across him on the road, always headed the opposite direction, 3-4 times a year.
see him most frequently in the la jolla and balboa park areas. last year, came across bill at the top of mount soledad
(la jolla area) which is a decent climb even if you take the easiest way up. considering the dozens of surgeries he's had
over the years-especially lower body surgeries-his perseverance on a bike is nothing short of amazing.

I have seen him riding at centuries in the so cal area. An odd note, I saw him riding in my neighborhood (on the east side of Los Angeles) around 1968 while he was at UCLA, my brothers didn't believe me until they read somewhere that he was a rider.

Good article. I'm a big C's fan so I enjoyed watching him when he played for the Celtics. I enjoyed watching him play for Portland as well. Plus he just has an interesting persona.

I was walking along the pacific beach board walk yesterday with some friends, and heard a deep "on your right guys." It was him and he made that bike look silly small. Pretty sure it was that orange one pictured above.

If you never saw him play in college, you missed him at the very best of his game. He could pull down a rebound, fire an outlet pass, and then still run the court to finish the break with a lay-up. He was, quite simply, the best college center I ever saw. He had a turn around jump shot that was as deadly as Jabbar's sky hook, and the Final Four championship game he had vs. Memphis State may have been the best final game performance by any player, ever. He did all of this when dunking was illegal.

And he played with a joy that was visible on his face. When UCLA's 88 game winning streak was finally broken at ND, he walked off the court with a huge smile, tapping his hand against his leg in time with the ND fight song.

I love Jason Gay's constant attempts to remake the WSJ Sports page into the WSJ Cycling page. The man is incorrigible, in a good way. Constant cycling references in the largest paper in the US. Gay once published a full page article on the 'cross World Championships when they were in Richmond. I wonder what percentage of his readers even knew what the hell cross is?
