Your Weekend Ride Reports - April 23/24/25

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Weekend Ride Reports - April 23/24/25

Happy ANZAC long weekend! Are you getting in lots of cycling in the beautiful autumn weather this weekend? Or are you celebrating spring where you are?

Tell us about your cycling this weekend.

Saturday -- 61.3 km ... an out-and-back on a beautiful autumn day with blue sky, colourful trees and light winds.

We suspect Rowan might actually have two cracked ribs (one on either side). But he is handling the cycling all right. He's a bit tired, but it doesn't hurt his rib cage. And the activity is probably good.

Sunday -- 55.8 km! Another lovely autumn day .... I do like the colours and smells of autumn.

Our route was slightly hillier than yesterday's and slightly windier.

I've got photos ready to post, but unfortunately I don't have enough internet oomph to upload them. Tomorrow, I should be back in business again.

Saturday : Nice spring day, and my first charity/group ride. Fifty miles(I actually ended up doing 52.5 miles), hillier than I originally expected but still finished strong (@14.5 mph average speed).

Sunday : Windy day, with gusts of over 30mph which made for some tough riding but still finished strong, 25 miles solo @14.5mph.

This weekend I'm on vacation about 500 miles from home. Brought my bike along on vacation for the first time.

Saturday I found a shop ride to join up with. Seemed straightforward with about 16 people and a bit over 30 miles. I was unprepared. Three sprint areas plus a series of rollers near the end that I could not hang with. Had another one of the folks who fell off catch up with me and we tried to get back to the group. I'm not too proud to admit she was stronger than I and spent more time off the front - but we did about 5 miles at between 25 and 27mph.

Sunday I intended to do a bit more miles, so I headed down to the barrier island. Stared along and was doing well until I came to the turnaround at the end of the road and started coming back up into the wind. Ouch. Not much for elevation changes along the beach, but the wind absolutely sucks. I ended up stopping 4 times to stretch my back, and had a hard time holding down food when I finished. I think I pushed it too hard between yesterday and today.

But I will get stronger.

26 miles on the smart trainer (16 miles Sat, 10 miles today) as the wind outside was a sustained 20+ mph with gusts over 30mph.

Needed parts for the car so Saturday I jumped on the bike and ran down to Autozone. This is still pretty new to me being able to run to the store by bike rather than 30-40 miles by car.

Today I jumped out on the bike for a bit after doing some yard/garden work and after dinner. Beautiful early evening and the big State road was pretty empty. Only 18 miles, but that's a pretty nice ride for me. Love pedaling down the major roads when they are almost void of cars. So much smoother than the back country roads with the rough chipseal.

24.97 miles on Saturday. Averaged 14.7mph. Now I know to go once around the block after my ride to get over 25 miles. Not bad for me, I've doubled my distance in 2 weeks and thanks to my new computer found out I'm slightly faster than I thought I was. It's beautiful spring weather in Louisiana right now. Which means at least one of my weekend days is devoted to lawn care .

Well I'm depressed. I got whatever flu/cold/respiratory bug that was going around. I haven't been able to ride for the past couple or weeks. I've been barely able to have enough energy to go to work and do some stretches core exercises. I feel a little better, but still coughing. Hopefully, this weekend I'll be ready. I'm missing all the good weather before summer.

Meh. The weather was pretty crappy out on Long Island. Saturday was drizzly and a bit windy, and Sunday was chilly and very windy. Was only able to eke out 50mi total. I'm never going to make 2k for the year at this rate. :-\

Sunday was our annual Haleiwa Metric Century that's put on by Hawaii Bike League (their other one at the end of Sep is the Honolulu Century). The weather had been nice (but fairly windy past month) but Sat was mostly overcast with passing showers. Sunday was about the same. Intermittent rain over about 1/3rd of the route (which is an out and back so you get it twice). But there were supposedly 1000 riders and that made it nice. Even though there is only a single road around the island (so 100% of the traffic in that side has to use the road) drivers were courteous, even with riders being two-abreast at times while passing and taking the lane. With the overcast it made it much easier -- the air temps are typically good here but direct sunlight will wear you down. We rolled out at 0730 so pretty much just the "dawn patrol" surfers out there but as the day went along picked up more traffic. We ride through the town of Laie which is LDS and shut down except for folks going to church including the Polynesian Cultural Center tourist attraction. I was back at the start by 1100 to complete a nice, scenic ride.
