Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Did anybody mention the Bontrager Ballista yet? IMO, it's a lot cleaner looking than the Prevail, which I find a bit goofy looking.

I like that, but it doesn't look much different than the Volt or Sweep.

What is this sacred "no visor" rule that you speak of, and what is its purpose?

just one of the items on the equipment checklist of goofy, useless plastic parts...

dork disk, spoke reflectors, helmet visor...

Helmet visors are ok on mtb helmets, but not on road helmets. It's just a goofy "rule".

Most likely because road cyclists wear cycling caps under the helmet that have visors.

I'm partial to Giros. I had been rocking an Atmos but I replaced that with a Synth. The Synth fits well and minimizes the size of my huge melon.

The Evade may look like that whale in the stock photo, but in real life it doesn't. It's the only helmet I've found that doesn't make my head look like a mushroom.
A friend of mine just got one of those Catlike helmets in blue and it makes him look like

I think it has more to do with the upright riding posture vs a road cyclist being bent over more(head tilted down slightly), and the visor would limit forward vision.

It depends on our melon. I see helmets that look good on other people but made me look like a mushroom. I never think I look right in any helmet, but the best for me was Giro. A lot of people say worry about the fit/comfort and not how it looks.

That definitely makes sense. We'll go with that.

I'm with the Bontrager Ballista myself, I think it looks great and last time I looked it had really good reviews.

They're pretty different helmets. Basically a standard bucket vs aero. Maybe you're thinking of the Vertigo?

MIPS is kind of a (not-funny) funny thing. Many helmets have gone to a two-layer design as well, they just don't pay MIPS the licensing. MIPS made necessary in part because of cheap helmet design, where the shell foam directly rests on pads on the head. There's also some healthy skepticism as to whether IRL it actually does anything helpful other than make the MIPS patent holders licensing money....it probably doesn't hurt anything ofc.

...Of course, MIPS has also become a marketing point thanks to Bicycling Magazine, and a fairly terrible bit of journalism on their part...

I've been looking at Casco since last year. I think their helmets looks pretty awesome. Would like to get my hands on this one (Casco Speedster).

OR their SpeedAiro

Speedster and Speedairo are two very different helmets. Retention is different, how it sits on the head is different, so is the bug guard. IMHO the "TC" combo kit is worth it.

I ordered a Speedairo and got it last week. Very nice lid. A Giro Air Attack Shield as it should have been, Ihad been borrowing a roadie mate's AAS for a week before ordering the Casco. Like many shield helmets, it can get a bit toasty behind the visor above 30C (nature of the beast), Casco is better ventilated, more comfy on the head, and the shield wraps the face better-so less eye-watering in crosswinds. Does have a little bit more of a speed whistle due to the bug mesh.

Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

Much less excess foam-mould flashing than many Giro lids I've seen. All around a better made lid. AFAIK it is NOT CPSC certified, although it meets EU standards-which only really matters if you are racing.
