Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

STRAVA Premium

Now you're talking! I just went premium yesterday and messed around with my phone and got the live segments set up. Hit the road headed to several segs.
I love how it works. I moved up near the top on some of the segments where I had been in the 30 to 40s .
A couple of the segs where I was near the top I fell short due to being wore out from the ride. I was impressed with the kom and my PR images blowing past me on a couple segs.
All my times are solo . I love how you see the start and finish on the segs. On some of my PR times prior to premium I had slowed down short of the finish line.
Go STRAVA! ! Go Me!!

Glad you like it - for me, it is a bit of a distraction, so I've disabled them.

Yep. I've been disabling segments, too. Nothing worse to me than being on a climb and not being able to see my rpms and heart rate because they are hidden by the segment screen.

I don't use the app so much, but the live segments on my garmin kills the battery a lot faster than normal. I used it a lot in the beginning, but now only have a few segments selected to come up.

I like the live segments most of the time on my Garmin. A lot of the time I just bypass the screen though.

My strava is on a break. I cracked a rim two days ago and waiting for the new rim to arrive. I have been scouring Craigslist for a second bike for times like this. I'm thinking of breaking my daughters Little 500 bike out to get some miles. I would look like a bear on a tricycle.

Anyone tried the live segments on an older Garmin (510 or 810)? Not a Premium member, but I'd consider it if it definitely works and works well.

I saw that feature, and I often wondered -- how do you GET the live segments when you're out riding?

I only have a Garmin Edge 200 -- and I keep my iPhone in my pocket or bag...so how would I even get them?

I have a 510 and am a premium member. On short climbs when you can go full gas live segments are kind of neat. On longer climbs where you need to pace yourself, it's a problem not being able to see your power numbers

on my Android when I hit a starred segment and the KOM and my PR pop up and I am not going for it I hit the button on the bottom right and it puts me back on speed, cadence etc screen. I hear the talking but only see the info screen.

When I'm riding hard and going for a PR I like it but when I'm not I agree that not being able to see the then relevant info is annoying. I looks like they would make a button to go back to the regular screen when wanted.

Forget live segments.

I like Premium for the power meter features.

With the 810, you're allowed up to 100 starred live segments. I'm not sure if that's the same on the 520, or if the 520 recognizes a segment even if it's not starred?

When you come up to a starred segment, the garmin screen changes to a map, with distance left and time behind/ahead information at the top. Last I checked, you could only have two, I can't remember if they can be edited or not...and you're stuck with the map, no other option there. The time behind information can be time behind your PR, a person's time you follow, or the KOM - this can be edited, but it defaults to person you follow or PR if no one you know has ridden that segment.

Most times it's fairly accurate, however, I sometimes get where it'll bounce from 12 seconds, to 3 seconds, to 8 seconds, to 1 second. I can't tell if its because there are multiple starred segments in the same place, or if it's picking up multiple times (your PR, your buddies best time, the KOM), or if it's just a bug and the time is way off. Of course, I've had it tell me that I'm 15 seconds off the pace at the beginning of the segment, continue to tell me that all the way through the segment, and then at the end tell me I PR'd the segment.

It works, but there are a few bugs (typical garmin). I was really excited about it when it first launched, but have since toned it down because the garmin constantly beeps at you. And although segments make great intervals, the beeping gets old when you're just trying to get to work, or focus on something else. The other frustrating thing, you notice how many stupid people made segments that end in the middle of the intersection, or require you to blow through a stop sign. And lastly, the battery dies faster. I have to charge my 810 weekly, as opposed to every other week.
