Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2005 trek 1500, or 2004 trek 2100?

I've wanted a nice bike for as long as i can remember hand have never gotten one. For the past few years i've ridden my dads Schwinn Continetal, it has served me well...but its time to get a real bike.

I was almost certain i wanted a 1500, then i went to my bike shop and i noticed the 2100 (which i hadnt ever actually looked at).

Trek lists the 1500 at $1100, so i ahd justified that amount, thne i saw the '04 2100 and my bike shop is selling it for 1300.

My question is, is the extra stiffness in the rear worth the extra cost?

I'm a big fan of the 1500, but if you can get the 2100 for roughly comparable price (sweat them another hundred), go for it. The 2100 has better wheels, so your ahead right there.

As for the frame, I not sure how much the carbon seat stays actually contribute to a stiffer ride. Friends with similar frames have said that carbon stays help reduce road chatter. Sounds nice, but I haven't actually put it to the test.

My 1500 does not lack for stiffness, however, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Funny you say the 2100 is stiffer... I find the opposite... the carbon stays tend to flex on me... a scarry thought. If you can get the 2100 only a few hundred more I would go for that... in last years silver...

That makes sense, alum. is supose to be stiffer then carbon i supose.

The only reason i'd get the 2100 is because the frame is better, if i reach the point where i feel the 1500's components arent up to par i can upgrade.

If the frame isnt worth the money tehn i'm not sure if it's worth it to me. We are talking the difference of $300...hmmm

Keep in mind too, this is an '04 2100...not an '05

1. I'm very happy with my 1500, so there's nothing wrong with keeping $300 bucks in your pocket (to spend on other stuff!).

2. I bet you can get the LBS to through in some junk for free too. There seems to be a little more negotiation in bike stores than in other stores, especially if there's another LBS in town.

3. '04 vs '05 wouldn't influence my decision at all.

4. I have a post on upgrading starter bikes that discusses the modifications I've made over the last year. You can search for it in this forum.

If you want to talk about upgrading starter bikes look at my bike... a 2100 equiped like a much more expensive model... i.e. like a madone 5.9...

The 2100 is probably going to be ligher than the SLR al 1500 (zr9000 vs slr)

My girlfriends uncle was once into biking very much, as was his (then) girlfriend. They split and left over was a very nice womens Canondale. I took it down to get my girlfriend on it, and it had some special valves on the tires so i took it to my LBS, he fixed the tires up, and i put down $100 on the 1500 so he could hold it for me for about a month :-)

make on offer on the 2100. All they can do is say no, or counter a bit higher.
