Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

$1,500 and Ultegra? Can it be done?

Hello,

I wanted to know if it is possible for a bike to have Ultegra and around the $1,500 mark? If so what are some options?

Thanks,
RH

Chinese frame, groupset, and done.

Unless you're interested in buying used, at which point a lot more doors are likely opened.

Can you type bikesdirect.com into a web browser? If so, then yes, it can be done.

Nope: Full ultegra is $630ish, Chinese frame is $500ish, China wheels $500ish, China bars/stem 100ish. Plus a saddle......
Close but I priced out a China bike with 105 and came out to around $1700.

I don't think you have any options for this aside from old ultegra and or old frame.

Bikes Direct has them starting from $900. For that you get Ultegra derailleurs, shifters, and cassette; Tektro brakes and FSA crankset; aluminum frame with carbon fork legs; no-name hubs and cockpit components. For $1500 you can have a carbon frame, full Ultegra with brakes and crankset, Mavic wheelset, Ritchey cockpit.

I assume you are talking about new bikes for $1500? You'll be able to find plenty of used bikes on ebay/craigslist at that price.

For new bikes at $1,500 you will either find full-price bikes that compromise on frame or component quality, bikesdirect, or discounted bikes. Here are a few I was able to find with a quick google search:

BikesDirect:
Save Up to 60% Off 22 Speed Shimano Carbon Road Bikes, Roadbikes - 2015 Motobecane Immortal Pro
Save Up to 60% Off Kestrel Talon Shimano 105 equipped Triathlon Bikes, Tri Bikes - 2011 Kestrel Talon Triathlon Tri Bikes

$1500 for Ultegra is easily doable as long as you stay away from LBSs. You could build your own for that price or go with re-builders of Chinese budget frames.

I posted this in your other thread... $1500 and Ultegra shipped to the US: Ribble Gran Fondo Special Edition Ultegra 6800 - Carbon Road Bikes - Ribble Cycles

It's a Chinese Carbon frame, Ultegra groupset and brakes, entry level RS11 wheels, and looks better than the majority of BD bikes. Albeit they probably reverse the brakes for UK-style braking (right handed front brakes).

Or this one: Planet X Pro Carbon Shimano Ultegra 6800 Road Bike | Planet X

$1330 shipped, Chinese Carbon frame,Ultegra groupset, Fulcrum racing wheels, and you can get it with US-style left front braking.

Full Ultegra gruppo can be had for $599 from Wiggle.com, with free shipping, so that leaves $901 for frame, fork, bars, stem, seatpost, wheels, saddle, bar tape, tires, tubes.

You can get a CAAD10 frame and for for $550 all day on ebay. That's $351 left over. Not much left. Of course, the Ultegra crank won't fit, so you'll have to sell it for $150, and pick up something else for $150.

Bargain basement on fleabay will get you a bar, stem and seatpost for $100 (think FSA Gossamer)... $251

Tire and wheels... I just offed a set of Aksium Elites for a bargain of <$200... included tires and tubes... $51 left over.

That's some nice bar tape.

If you're patient and don't need it now it can be done without having to go Chinese. I actually have the 2016 Kestrel Talon listed above, but the 105 version which I swapped out for full Ultegra. I was able to get the 2016 Kestrel 105 for $1150 sold the gruppo that came with it for around $250 and put full Ultegra 6800($550 from Ribble) on it. Total cost = $1,450 with lifetime frame warranty from an American company. It'll probably be easier to get something like this when it's cold out. You didn't mention if what kind of frame material you want. With aluminum it is easy to get an Ultegra bike for way under $1,500. If you want carbon, it is a bit tougher but can be done without resorting to Chinese direct.

Another option not yet mentioned is the Nashbar CR5. Carbon and full Ultegra minus brakes for $1,440 during their 20% off "sales" which they run every other week.

Carbon+Ultegra $1,400 https://www.performancebike.com/bikes...96_-1___400784

Alu+Ultegra $1150 https://www.performancebike.com/bikes...67_-1___400784

Plus with Performance Bike you get 10% back for gear.

Saw a few of those during an REI sale. I bought a Ghost Nivolet with 105 for $600. They had a white Ultegra Ghost Nivolet for $900 on sale then as well, but it was a 54cm. Check out Bulls Bikes (in the US, they're a German brand). https://www.bullsbikesusa.com/desert...-pro-p-73.html they have sales all the time. Right now their Ultegra bike is $1499. Weighs 17.5 lbs.

I'm looking for Ultegra STI and Ultegra derailleurs in a bike. I can change out the crank, brakes, and chain (or something SRAM) down the road.

Mine was $1800 with full Ultegra. I easily could have gotten down to $1500 simply by getting something like Vuelta Corsa Lite wheels instead of carbon wheels

Full ultegra from ribble: $570
go to craigslist and offer $930 for the bike of choice and swap the components

If you go alloy, with Allez or CAAD, you can lucky out and get those for 600 bucks and have enough money for a wheelset.

Only on discounts. I got a new ultegra Felt CX for $1400. If you are patient and look for sales, maybe. Otherwise used.

I threw caution to the winds and bought a Nashbar CR5 Carbon frame and Ultegra (mainly) groupset. The brakes are FSA; brifters, ders, and crankset are Ultegra. The sale price is usually a little south of $1500. I replaced the saddle and stem and will replace the brakes later.

Same. So many barley use bikes for less than half of the msrp a year ago.
Here ther was an allez comp race for 1500. The msrp for the bike was like 2900. The 40mm carbon clinchers alone are worth 700+

Sure it can be done. Here is A mostly Carbon build.Alum would be less.
I'll have to look for some prebuilt Ultegra that are available for around $1500.
And if you do not mind 10 speed can go even lower.

Frame/fork/BB-Trek Madone 4 carbon + BB $600
Groupset-Ultegra $535 Merlin
Bars-Easton EC70 Carbon $55
Stem around $20 to $40
Carbon chinese Post $15 Ebay
Sadlle-WTB Rocket $20
Tires/Tubes-Cont GP4000 II $80
Vuelta Corsa Lite wheelset $205
Around $1500

Similar to car buying, just hang tight until the 2017 models start to roll in and then inquire about pricing on leftover bikes. I know with some brands, previous year model bikes can still be ordered for months after they've gone out of production at greatly reduced prices.
