Hey All,

Been about 4 years since I was in the market for a cycling computer. Looking to have speed, cadence, HRM, and perhaps location tracking for Strava purposes.

I also always have my phone with me (S7 Edge supports both Bluetooth LE and Ant+) but would prefer to not have it mounted on the bike.

I don't really need the advanced course features or GPS navigation / mapping; but having a nice size screen, easy to see out in the sunlight would be great. As a techie, I am happy to spend a few bucks more on what "looks cool" as well

Thoughts? I'm looking at Garmin and Wahoo's products but there is a lot out there and am open to suggestions.

I'm in the same boat as you and there's quite a few options out there to consider. For me the Garmin Edge 520 bundle seems to be the one to get for overall value and features but do I need the added features? There's also the Garmin Edge 25 ($399) that's very small, does everything I think it needs to do and has ant+ connectivity for added heart rate and cadence sensors for $159. Then there's the new Garmin Vivoactive HR watches that are pretty much a wearable Edge25 but with a built in HR Monitor and color display for $249. Here's some links

I just bought a Cateye Velo 7 for $20. It's got the basic dist/time/speed/odo, which is about all I really care about. Cheap and simple.

Cateye Strada 410 w/ cadence and hr. If I want the GPS stuff I'll put the iPhone in the jersey, one headphone if turn-by-turn is needed.

I found over the course of my marriage that any cycling/motorcycling purchase can sold on the benefit of safety. "But honey, with a 510 or a 520, I can set up live track and you can see where I am at any given moment so you don't have to worry about me." I actually did that when I purchased my 510 and I got more miles in that summer than I have any other summer before or since.

I've actually thought of this tactic.

Also, I've considered that she should ride with a HRM (on the rare occasions she does ride) since she does have some medical reason, due to a genetic blood disorder, that monitoring her heart rate would benefit her. The Edge 200 she currently has (my old one) doesn't support a HRM so clearly she should take my Edge 500 and I should replace it with something else.

Id say that, if you dont need mapping past a pre-loaded course breadcrumb trail, and you dont need power meter compatibility, then the new garmin edge 25 does everything you need, and has Ant+ for sensors(but not powermeters)

Along those sames lines, the still found online Garmin 500 would also be good.(500 might read powermeters, I forget)

NEw stuff, the 520, is pretty sweet. Strava live, which will tell you when segments are approaching giving you exact start and stop prompts.. cool if thats your thing(I enjoy strava so, no judgement here). Mapping does show a full color map, but doesnt give turn by turn gps directions like the 810 does. And metrics wise, basically everything measurable. Power meter ready, cadence/Speed/HRM etc etc. IMO, unless you want turn by turn directions for courses, the 520 hits all the marks. 810 adds turn by turn and some other cool stuff. Doesnt have strava live though.

If I was buying now, it'd be between those two. 520 or 810.

I have an Edge 1000, Edge 520, and a Wahoo Elemnt. The Edge 1000 is great but the battery life sucks. The Wahoo Elemnt is a buggy, featureless turd and I'm going to get rid of it. The 520 is in the Goldilocks zone as far as I'm concerned. I'm now using it the most. It has pretty much all of the features of the 1000 except for the touchscreen and memory.

I do the same thing; this will improve my safety. You want me to come home.

The day I got hit, I had a Live Track running. She found out about it when a bystander helped me get my phone out of my pocket to call her. The map thing only works if you look at it, sadly. That's why I need the radar thing, and a newer Edge to show me what the radar can see.

How is the battery life on the 520?

I charge it once a week at most. I guess ~10 hours or so per charge?

Caution with that! If you have sharp eyes, you may shut down the backlight on 520 and have a batery life of 10-12 hours per charge. But if your eyes are not very sharp, or if you don't wear your optical glasses, you will need to use permanent backlight, which will reduce the batery life to 5-6 hours per charge.
