Stem change - Length, angle or height?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Stem change - Length, angle or height?

I have a Trek 1.5 series (58cm) that's all stock. Now that I've been riding more seriously the last few years, and it's been extra windy around here this year, I'd like to get lower or more aero. On my hybrid, I removed a 1cm stem spacer and it actually made the bike handle and feel better. So I figured I'd try on on my road bike, removed one spacer and it felt horrible to me. Handling was worse, and I was just uncomfortable.

The stock stem is 100cm in length, and angles up slightly. Would I be better off going with a longer stem, or one with less of an angle (or both)? And what advantage/disadvantage does lowering the bars by removing spacers have? My goal is to be a little less upright and a little more aero.

On my 1.2, I flipped the stem over, removed all spacers, bought a "Cobb" top cap (5mm) and bought a -17 degree stem cause it still wasn't low enough.

Begin by flipping it. Also, whenever you try a new setup, give it at least a few rides. You need some time to adapt.

Go on ebay/craigslist and find some cheap used stems in different lengths/angles and just try some out.

Took me two stems to really get and idea of what i liked and what felt comfortable, cost me about $18, and now if i want i higher end/lighter stem i know what im looking for.

And no it wont affect the handling other than putting more weight on your front wheel, which improves it IMO.
