Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yup. Wouldn't bother me if mods deleted some of the more rude, useless posts.

I am a mod on an investing forum and they have a zero tolerance policy for nonsense posts. BF should tighten up a bit.

I have been here since 2004. Now I feel old! I read and check in nearly every day. I don't post quite as much as I once did because nearly every subject was generating 8 to 30 pages and anything that I would offer was already said a few times.

If you click on New Posts a few times in the course of 30 minutes to an hour you will find the last topic you read or posted to wayyyyy back there in the directory.

Ipso facto pro vivo.

+1

I'm on another forum that has much tighter moderation than BF ... and that's good.

And posting their rides on Strava rather than posting them here or talking about them here.

Since there's no connection between Bikeforums and Strava ... they are there, not here.

It's a balance and I support the mods here. If the mods here were really tough, this thread would not be here.

I support the mods too ... I think they do a great job. I just think that tightening up a bit wouldn't hurt.

You've been around a good while, and you've been a pretty decent citizen. Maybe you'd like to volunteer some of your personal time, for free, to help marshall this zero tolerance policy. You know, in your spare time when you're not tied up at work, or trying to get a ride in after work, or raising your kids, or spending some time with your spouse and real life friends, or enjoying any of the other ways to entertain yourself. All for free, of course, volunteer work, just as a way to give back to the forum. How about it?

What works over there may not work over here. Or maybe mods get paid over there for their time. Maybe that forum just attracts a different sunset of people.

I'm on a photography forum elsewhere that's tranquil enough for kindergartners and nuns. Effortlessly. You'd never know they had a moderation staff because you never see them. There's nothing for them to do, and it's mostly because of the people they attract.

It attracts the fitness bunch you'd like to attract over here.

I'm telling you ... consider it ... consider a bit of a forum structural shake-up and expansion to try to attract more people here ... might be just the ticket ...

Haven't bothered to look at stats but it seems like there are fewer posts, and fewer active posters.

My assumption is that they way people get information is migrating from message boards to youtube, and social media.

This place used to be a lot more fun. Oh well I guess you can only argue Shimano v Campy, Mechanical v Electric, disc brakes on road bikes, etc. for so long.

Where's r600DuraAce when you need him?
Yeah it's dying. I attribute it to the zeal with which any controversial remark is squashed.
Remember Botto, UMD, those were the days. The posts were fun and informing. Now it's just soooooo bland.

I helped moderate a vintage motorcycle forum for many years. Yes, things sometimes got a little testy, one thing we had going for us was a set of highly visible, well documented set of rules.

If someone violated a rule they received one warning pointing them to the rule they violated. The repeated violation resulted in bans of varying length depending on severity, including forever. Assuming the site owner trusts the mods, one paramount rule was NO arguing with a mod.

So while I'm much better behaved, there is also less interaction.
Also I've found the website often not working with my browser or running scripts that slows things down - like now. It is frustrating to use.

Having been a member for a long time, prior Tom Stormcrowe and probably all but a handful of members I've seen cyclical changes. What may not be happening is the constant infusion of new members and that could well be due to the "old school" nature of bboards, as many have mentioned.

OTOH, this thread is certainly moving along.

I am sure you and others regarded UMD and Botto with affection. But they were mean and vicious posters who took people they didn't agree with and insulted their intelligence and riding abilities... all in the name of fun, of course, for their fans.

They reminded me of the particularly unpleasant genre of stand-up comedians who found victims and mercilessly pummelled them. Those comedians always have an audience of like-minded people, but I always found it interesting that those same performers were extremely insecure in their own lives.

The likes of Botto and UMD are among the reasons why the internet sports so many bullies and trolls... they set the trend in giving people licence to insult, and frankly, these forums have been better off without them.

Problem is the mods... there are some mods on some sites I just couldn't stand. One of the times I stayed away from here was when UMD was a mod. He was unsufferable before that and it absolutely intolerable while he had power. Strong mods mean you'd better be ok with the mods or you might as well leave.

That said, the sheriff is awesome, other than his terrible taste in football teams.

Edit: What Rowan said.

Yes ... I wish the rules were clearly written and posted here. They used to be easily accessible at one point long ago, but then the page where they were died for a couple years and it was a "from memory" thing, and then then the reappeared down in the basement under forum help or somewhere. They need to be made a whole lot more visible.

Here are the rules ...

https://www.bikeforums.net/forum-sugg...ad-please.html

But it seems to me that the FAQ section Tom mentions had more in it than just the rules.

I wonder how many have read these.

I don't think the forum is dying, but it may seem like it to some of the regulars that have been around for a while. People tend to come and go as their interests and hobbies shift around. Some will be back, some won't.

Since this thread has morphed into comments on moderation, I'll offer up my 2 cents. I like the moderation here. Sure there are some snarky posts, but I get a kick out of them since I don't take this stuff** too seriously. It's just not worth getting worked up over. It would be nice if some of the more obvious trolls would get axed, but they're also a form of entertainment for disturbed blokes like me.

** comments from anonymous posters I'll probably never know
