Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thanks for all the prayers and kind thoughts. We are both laid up in bed for at least another day.

Going back to sleep.

Food rewards are great, we all respond to them, I used to get a Heath Bar as a treat after an organic chemistry study session.
I use treats for training my Golden retriever combined with praise. The treats are not all the times, maybe every 2 or 3rd time to reinforce. It does not take much, just a 1/4 of a milk bone or similar pellet size treat and weight is no issue.
Now if I gave him a cheeseburger every time... well he might put on weight.
Interesting dog my new golden, it's of European stock, an English Cream variant, very light with cream highlights. Absolutely beautiful. My last Golden was the more typical, an absolute pig, loveable to the extreme but my god, to watch him eat, a suction of enormous capacity.
Our new golden could almost care less. We put out a bowl of food in the morning and he rarely touches it until the evening. Perfect physique.

Aw sorry to hear this. Hope y'all heal up soon!

Today I wanted something easy on the MTB, just some time getting used to riding it. I floated the idea of riding a road called the Old Ridge Route & my two friends took me up on the offer. The Ridge Route is the road that used to run over the mountains from LA to Bakersfield. Now people just take I5, but the old road is still there, semi-maintained so that it can be used in times of emergency. If the 5 is shut down, there's not too many routes over the mountains.

The section of Old Ridge Route that we rode today is 17.8 miles one way, so 38 RT with 3300 ft climbing. Just beautiful up there, very peaceful & quiet. Really enjoyed the morning, riding with good friends. We encountered two other people in total. The road is paved in sections, broken pavement in sections, with good amounts of dirt, sand & gravel. Lol, I was kidding with a friend that I should have named my ride in Strava "Riding Right Over $hit". That takes some getting used to but it's pretty cool. Also- climbing normal road grades with all those gears is a snap, despite the increased weight of the bike.

@f4rrest, if you have not done this ride, it's worth driving up for it. Best on a MTB or gravel bike, but doable on a road bike. Ping me if you want to do it, I'd go ride this again for sure.

Boooo. CC's current promo code for 20% off one full price item doesn't apply towards ptap hubs. That would have totally gotten me off of the fence. Further, if you're going to exclude a brand, why not just list them up front instead of letting the disappointment wash over me after putting it in the cart and trying to apply the code? I'm thinking that they have more than a few excluded brands.

Still in the hospital. They will probably throw me out tomorrow. Have seen my wife only once but the nurses give us reports on each other.

In the meantime, I'm drinking coffee through a straw because I can't sit up.

Those 50+123 guys are fast. Course, my plan was slightly flawed in my first race, and after trying to ride with 6 attacks, I was booted out the rear. Hung in for over half the crit before they left me for dead. The 40+3 race later that evening was more to my liking, though the earlier race didn't help the cause. Nice bunch, and I was OK racing with those young un's.

Today, I got to race with both groups together, so there were 60 of us out there. Tailgunner, simply because I didn't know what to expect, trepidation, and just not sure if I belonged. Either way, I slowly started working my way up. Figure 8 course, like two weeks ago, so it was pretty technical, and it was tough to move up, but it was happening. I moved up to mid pack, which is always a different race than up front, but I didn't plan to be there long. Fitness was decent, all was starting to go well, and they decided to crash in front of me. I had it missed, but others chose to add to the pile, then I didn't have it missed. Over the bars, landed on some guy, untangled my bike from the barricade, and rode to the start/finish to await my free lap. They didn't believe me till they saw the ruined saddle, and other marks on the bike.

Got back in at the tail of the race again, worked my way up to 18th, and called it a day. Bike has some battle scars, new shoes made it through OK, and the old body is a bit beat up, but hell, it's bike racing.

Coffee is good, even if it is out of a straw. Thank heavens for small favors.

Continued good wishes.

Ends tonight, obviously. Their stated restriction was that it didn't apply towards bikes or frames, but there are more unlisted restrictions, so good luck.
