Answer from Kask regarding MIPS

Hello, I wrote to kask asking if they were going to implant MIPS in their helmets, this was the answer. Its interesting that no one really knows if MIPS is an actual advantage, I think MIPS makes sense and it wont hurt, the only lack is that it limits the choice of helmets.

Can anyone proves that MIPS works?

"thanks for writing us and for your interest in our helmets, we will not implant the MIPS on our helmets for several reasons, but first of all because after 4 years that this technology is on the market, it is still not proved that it make the helmet safer, after various test done internally and with external company and safety certification agency we realized that it doesn’t really add any value to the security of the helmet, while for sure it add weight and provide less comfort to the helmet. So for the reason above and various other that I am not mentioning, MIPS will not be applied to our helmets as we don’t believe that this technology will add any value to our products, except for the fact that is a powerful marketing tool.
We are on the other side developing a new technology to improve the safeness of the helmet."

Could one of the various other reasons be they have to pay to use MIPS?

Yes, that could be an important one

I had a Synthe MIPS. I crashed and cracked it a couple months ago. I replaced it for the non-MIPS version.

I think in theory MIPS makes sense. But I didn't find it useful practice. First, the system created two bumps that dug into my head. I had to glue additional padding into the helmet to cover them. (Note: This was something that affected me. A teammate with a MIPS Synthe did not experience the same issue.)

My second complaint had to do with ventilation. The MIPS basically created a thin plastic shell inside the helmet that I felt made it hotter. It seemed to me that it trapped heat and provided a place for sweat to collect rather than to evaporate out of the helmet vents.

Also, I am looking to add a Protone to my collection in the near future. I don't care that it doesn't have MIPS.

I have a Synthe MIPS and crashed 3 days after i got it last November. I cracked the helmet and was able to still ride home.

Did having MIPS help.. it certainly didn't hurt. I got another using Giro's crash replacement and the LBS gave me a discount so I was out the door for $150 for the replacement.

I have 2000 miles and find it comfortable and the ventilation better than the previous Bontrager I had.

Reasons a manufacturer won't add MIPS:
1) License fees
2) It makes the helmet smaller if it's retrofitted. So if a medium used to fit, you might need a large.
