Buying Used - 2007 Specialized Roubaix Comp Triple vs 2013 Trek Domane 2.0

After having my old RB-2 Bridgestone road bike stolen, I've decided its time for an upgrade. I'm just getting into cycling, and ride once a week (20-30 miles, 2000-4000 climbing). Buying a new bike is out of my budget, and so I will be buying used. I'm still recovering from a herniated disc in my lower back, so I'm interested in endurance frames with a more relaxed geometry, and a upright stance.

Currently looking at either:

2007 Specialized Roubaix Comp Triple - Shimano 105
2013 Trek Domane 2.0 - Shimano Tiagra

Both are priced at $650. If there are other bikes that fit the mold of what I'm looking for, please feel free to recommend. Thanks for your input!

Well I'm a big fan of the Roubaix personally. And 105 is a step up from Tiagra (although I'm not sure if 2007 105 is truly a step up from 2013 Tiagra to be honest). That being said...as long as they're both well-maintained (and both fit), I think either will be a fine choice. Do you like the color scheme of one more than the other? Does one have any dings or anything?

The older Roubaix's were a bit 'softer' than the newer ones...and they really give you a lot of leeway with their stems and spacers on the steerer tube (not sure on the Trek) -- which brings up a good point -- since they are used -- look at the stems and make sure there's spacers under the stem on the steerer tube. If there's not, despite being an "h2" fit, it may have more saddle to bar drop than a race-oriented bike like a tarmac. My Roubaix with lowered stem (not slammed, still has 20mm spacer) is more aggressive than a stock Tarmac of the same size when it comes to saddle to bar drop. So look out for that.

Just from a value standpoint I'd go with the Trek. It's a newer bike with less wear. You're not giving up anything with the Tiagra either, being six years newer.

I own a 2011 Roubaix and it's a great ride. Very comfortable. Can't speak about the Trek though.

I would consider the amount each bike has been ridden... a 2007 might have spent most of its life in the garage and be in better shape than a 2013 daily rider. Chances are the 2007 has more wear and tear but you never know unless you check 'em out and take 'em for a test ride. The roubaix is all carbon while the trek has an aluminum frame, if that matters to you. 10 speed chains and other stuff is pretty cheap these days but the new 10 speed tiagra shifters/derailleurs aren't compatible with older 10 speed stuff, I think they changed the cable pull. The specialized came with a triple so if you want a wider gear range for hills that might be the one to pick assuming it is in decent shape mechanically.

I also have a 2011 Roubaix and it's quite comfortable. The trek look likes a decent bike though.

Triple cranks get lots of scorn, here, but, depending on the terrain where you ride, it may be the better choice. You can install a closer-spaced cassette, without losing useful climbing gears.

OTOH, if you're in flat territory, the chain ring sizes mean little.

Bluebook suggests $650 for the Roubaix is a little high.
