Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is the small, red "chicklet" zip-tied to the front fork?

Onboard or remote generation of running stats for the benefit of the rider/team, perhaps?

Data transmitter might be a more accurate description.

Dimension Data supply the devices which constantly transmit GPS position, speed, temperature etc.

This is the website for Dimension Data which has a link to live data feed when the race is on:

Tour de France

Each bike also has a transponder attached to the bike (as in the pic posted above). The transponders do not provide live data and only communicate when the riders pass a fixed sensor (ie at the finish line). The transponders are used to quickly provide the finishing order for the finish or KOM or intermediate sprints. It looks like the transponders are indeed attached to the right fork arm this year.

Put your feet on the pedals and push. Words of encouragement hum gracefully from it. "Keep going... that's it... 100km to go... no sweat..." You get the point.

Thanks for this. I am going to see how much it adds to each stage ... starting in about eight hours.

That's an AMB ChipX. It is now sold by MyLaps under the name Prochip Flex.MyLaps is pretty big in motorsports. The website is interesting. The entire Prochip timing system is at https://www.mylaps.com/en/timing-syst...ing-system/262

The big thing behind the seat may be this.... https://www.bikeradar.com/us/road/new...-france-44682/

Reaching link above:

"Live tracking will begin shortly after the television broadcast commences"

Why tie the live tracking to the broadcast...?
