Purchasing my first road bike
I am new to the site, but looking for some advice. I am considering buying a used road bike to get started, I'm a complete newb and have only rode once before. A used 2007 Specialized Tarmac Elite with 105 components was just traded in to my local bike shop. It's full carbon, received a tune up (apparently costs about $100 at this shop), and includes a professional fit.
I am wondering how much you think this should cost. The guy at the shop is telling me it's a great deal, but won't budge on the price. I'll post a photo in a minute.

So it's a guess the price game?
$400?
I would thin anything under $500 is quite a good deal, but I don't really know much about the used market.

Ahh, thanks for posting that site. What is the difference between a Tarmac "Pro" and "Elite". Does 105 come standard with a bike like this, or would that be included in those price estimates?

I've test rode 3 bikes recently. A Trek 60cm with aluminum/carbon forks (not 105, a tier or two lower), an Orbea 57 full carbon with 105, and the specialized 58cm described before. The specialized definitely "felt" the best, but I was't sure if the seat was better, or if the components/frame were really making that much of a difference.
btw I am about 6'1'' maybe 6'2''

Sorry, I put in Elite but got pro. Here is a 2008, so prices would be a little lower.

I would go with what feels the best. This will be the best way to keep you getting back on and enjoying the bike.
And my guess is 550.00

This is about what an Allez would cost new with a groupset about 2-3 levels lower.
Price the frame on ebay, add a groupset, wheelset... 850 is not bad at all. I would keep it in cosideration.

I offered $700 cash, and they said it was priced to sell. I may go back with the bike bluebook site and see if I can talk them down. I did like the way it rode a lot more than the Orbea, which is $1400 for a brand new 2016 model.

Honestly, if you like it, then it might be worth it. No new bike at that price point will come close to it. Alternatively, you can look around on CL and hope some 'better deal' shows up. Might happen tomorrow, might happen in three months.

Just remembered it is a 9 year old carbon bike. If I personally was buying a carbon bike, I would buy one brand new that does not have any history yet.

It comes down to what the bike is worth to you. I do find it strange they are not willing to negotiate on a used bike. You made a strong offer imo. At least you have an idea about what you like. Try to find another 58 Tarmac with a more reasonable price.

I would think the 58cm would be a better fit than the 60, but only you can decide that after trying them out. I wouldn't get too hung up on 105 vs Ultegra as the functionality difference is hard to discern.

depends how patient you are, and how many bikes are for sale in your area.
it's a decent bike but overpriced .... and if you have cash and patience, you have options. Unless the bike is far and away the best you have ever ridden ... then you can afford to wait for a better deal. Also, you can save more money and then can consider a wider range of bikes.
If it really is "priced to sell" then it is probably sold by now anyway, right? i'd keep shopping and check back with them occasionally. If it keeps sitting around their shop they might start to appreciate your offer more.

If this is the bike you want, I would wait them out. Give it a few weeks and see what happens. In the meantime keep looking.

I feel your $700 offer is quite fair for a 9 year old bike of that level. Like others have said, if you have patience, that price range can get you something very similar and most likely newer off Craigslist pretty easily.
