Shimano C24 wheelset causing flats
 

Hi all,
Need some advice. I got the c24 from Colorado Cyclist in April. Put on about 800 miles on them with no issues. Love them. Great on downhill and very stable in the wind. However, just recently I've gotten 7 flats in 3 rides. The tiny pinholes are on the Wheelset side and always in same location. Right on the strip that covers a spoke. I put a strip of tire tube over it and in 5 rides over 200 miles no flats. I know it's the Wheelset. I called Shimano. They told me to bring wheel to lbs and get a new strip. What should I do? I have a warranty, it's definitely the wheel and I can't feel anything that's making holes in my tubes. But i marked the spot and put a piece of tube on it..no issues since.

I'd do what shimano recommends.

Think about it. I also noted where the holes are happening.

They want me to buy another strip and pay to put it on. I'm guessing I could do my self. Never had this issue. But I can't feel anything protruding from the spoke area. I also wasted 7 tubes. They aren't free.

Most punctures are caused by something penetrating the tire -- that is, the hole in the tube is on the 'tire' side of the tube.

He's explaining that the holes he's getting are along the rim bed, so on the side opposite the tire.

Patch them; nearly free.

Couldn't you just take off the plastic rim strip and put some new rim tape on there yourself? It's very cheap (like $3 for a roll of Velox) and easy to do. The tape will stay in place and work better (IMO). Maybe I'm not understanding the problem?

That's what I decided to do. I ordered the Velox cloth tape . If the Wheel (rear) continue to flat my tubes, Shimano will replace.

Lol..correct. the wheel side...not sure why that was confusing . I'm blaming the wheels, not the tire. So common sense would lend you to believe it's the Wheelset (wheels or rim side as you noted).

I did do a patch on the rim. I placed a piece from a tube. It's working, but I don't think that's fair. Something is wrong with the wheel. I have a warranty. That's not a "fix". So I looked into the Velox and found them to be excellent and an upgrade. So I'll do that as my fix"". 😃 But if that's not the end,wheels will be replaced.

Oh, I don't run on patched tubes. I never will. Just my way.

You can fix it yourself in about 5 minutes if you're willing to spend $2.99 on a roll of Velox tape. What will it cost you to have Shimano fix it under warranty?

Hopefully that solves it. I've had problems with the plastic rim strips that come pre installed on some wheelsets moving around and causing flats, usually at the valve stem. Replacing with the tape has worked for me.

That's unfortunate. I bought 100 patches from China for $5 which will save me $800 in tubes. You can't tell the difference when they're in the tire and I've never had a patch fail me.

Strange that you would complain about paying for a rim strip install, but be adamant against patching tubes. Whatever, it's your money.

Hopefully this works. Guessing any idiot could replace this tape?😉😞

I didn't know anything about rim strip. I thought it was much more $$. I got 2 shipped for $10. It's the principle. Also, I avg about 3/4 flats per year. I ride about 3,000 miles per year. But I've never had a wheel give me issues . Ironic, some people hate, hate Mavic. I had two sets and put over 15,000 miles on them. Not one issue. I buy these and bam...an issue. I don't patch because I've had two issues in the past. Where did you get so many patches for that cheap?

Amazon. I just looked up the order and I guess I lied. It was 48 patches for $5.00 (which I actually paid for with a gift card I got for doing some stupid survey).

There isn't much to it, but check out youtube if you're unsure how to proceed. There are at least a few decent videos on there showing how to install.

Haha. At some point it's just a bunch of patches glued together, with no actual tube left.

As mentioned by others, patched tubes really are as good as new -- although I never go past 25 patches per tube, that's just nuts ;)

I collect 4 or 5 punctured tubes and do 'em all at once. Oddly satisfying.

And I find the 16-mm patches suit road-bike tubes better than the usual 25 mm jobs, although they are a bit harder to find. I think I paid $10 for 100 on eBay, sheesh.
