Buying first road bike-Need some opinions from the Guru's and Trolls
 

I wanted to ask you jerks a question.

I only ride fixed but there are some tasty hills and established paved roadie paths in the mountains where I live (Bay Area California) and I am really feeling the draw to head into the mountains and just ride it out.

I have exhausted my local 20-25 mile safe routes via fixed and I always leave from home; I don't rack my bike and ride and return to car, go home etc.

So where I'm going with this is the hills are about 3 miles away and I want a solid quality road bike I can leave home with, ride there, do 20 to 50 and ride home at least 2 to 3x a week in addition to my work commute and varies riding.

I'm considering the Pinarello F8 or Pinarello Gan RS.

No I'm not a racer, but there are regular rides in this area, century and charity rides I would love to participate in as a roadie.

My 2 large reasons for leaning towards the Pinarello are 1. I want to piss my current wife off with this purchase(very important cuz f$&k her) and 2. I want to buy something quality, that is current, will last, is sw8 and pleasing to MY eye that I will grow into as a rider. Rather than spend 1800 on something now, 2600 on something in 3 years etc and so on and so on.

I tend to go balls deep on these things/decisions(buy big time and then just become engrossed learning and loving it) and it's how I learned to fix my cars/truck/motorcycles and FG so I'm excited to learn about this piece of garbage Pinarello I'm interested in.

You have any recommendations? My budget is basically anywhere from 1$ to $6500.

Fantastic thread. I wish I knew what your regular screen name was so I could congratulate you on a such a brilliant idea for a thread. Back to your question -- once you figure out which bike you want, you should have it dipped in gold and encrusted with diamonds to drive the price up.

Your budget is $1-$6500.

Go to a bike shop, ride some bikes, buy one. It's honestly not that hard.

Remember that Cali is a community property state, so when you get divorced, your wife gets half.
Does Pinarello make the best unicycle?

I'm sure you'll get a lot of opinions from the carbon fanboys for Trek/Cdale/Spec/Chinarello. Then a retrogrouch will say buy a steel bike with Campy because crabon asplodes, and Shimano is unfixable.

Just get a bigger cog and keep riding your FG.

If your budget is that high contact Mike DeSalvo in Oregon or Kelly Bedford in NY and speak to real experts about frame materials, quality and pluses and minuses. There is a guy in Cali I forget his name that has a seven year wait, so don't bother with him.

Kelly Bedford has forgotten more about frame building than most know. DeSalvo builds killer frames. I have seen several, for about $2,000. Bedford a little more.

I would never spend that kind of coin on a stock pre-built bike. I don't care what the fashion is.

Get a custom bike and put more money in the groupset, wheels, shoes and not the frame material.

You are just flushing money down the toilet overspending on materials for the frame.

Contact those guys and get a custom bike if your budget is that generous.

I have 2 Pinarellos and love them both - a Dogma 60.1 and a Marvel. Both are quality bikes that are light and responsive. I also have a Cervelo P3, so look at their S and R lines as well.

If you can afford a Dogma F8, do it.

With that kind of budget - professional fit and custom frame, and you'll still be able to purchase all high-end components.

Having just gone through a divorce, the bike is cheaper...

Until she leaves. Then selling the bike to pay the lawyer really sucks.
