Best helmet in terms of safety

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tightening the straps may or may not improve the outcome. I have been getting concussions from not so hard hits because of a major head injury years ago. (Loose brain syndrome.) Last crash I did not have my strap tight enough. Hit the side of the helmet hard. Helmet spun around, knocking my glasses off and leaving a series of cuts near my eye. Also nearly took my ear off. (Both on the far side.)

That crash was noteworthy because I had no concussion at all. Wrecked helmet, broken collarbone, cracked rib. I was fully aware of the hard helmet hit, then it and the rest of my body grinding along the pavement. (I hit at close to 25 mph.) I then blacked out, but it was NOT a concussion. Just my brain saying "you don't need to see this". As soon as I came to a stop I was fully with it, exactly where expected and the car behind me was right where it should have been. And the concussion symptoms never happened. I was riding with a young man who questioned me at length expecting confusion. Only issue was not being able to answer one question I had never known the answer to!

Two weeks after that crash I read about MIPS for the first time. If MIPS accomplishes what my loose chinstrap did while sparing my glasses and ear, I'm in! (I bought the first MIPS helmet I found in my size and a visible color. (POC Trabec)

A small sampling of adult helmets without giving up too much...(Mods, please delete if deemed necessary)

Best Buy:
Cannondale Quick (overall score 84)
Bell Draft (82)

Recommended:
Scott Arx Plus (87)
Bell Gage Mips (83)
Bell Draft Mips (80)
Bontrager Circuit (79)

Obviously, there are more details and some of the helmets seem like they may not be suited for road cycling, so the info seems fairly random. Impact absorption (probably the most important variable) seems to be "Excellent" to "Very Good" on most of the helmets tested. Sorry, but out of respect for subscription content, I'll decline any requests for more details...

I have never spent more than 90 on a helmet.
